Devore Super 8

Hi gang,

There's a pair of used Devore Super 8 locally, should I go for it?

I have a Shindo system with an Aurieges and CC80. Room is fairly large, about 16' by 24'. The speakers are on the shorter wall. I sit 12' from the front wall.

My musical tastes are vocal, jazz, ensemble, blues, country, and occasional classical. I'm not a bass freak.

I currently use the Guarneri Memento. It's 88 dbs into 4 ohms. Will the Super 8 work better in my system?

Oh...on second thought if you are fan of Guarneri Memento ....Now Not sure if you going to like them. Especially your room is quiet big for the speakers IMO.

I like the GM, but I feel like I'm not getting the most out of it. Sometimes it sounds too bright and strained. I read some many reviews the Devore sounds effortless and very musical.

Tommy . Where are you locate at ? Also with your room size why not the O/93 or O/96 ?

Tommy...the DeVore Super 8s are a very good match with your Shindo gear because they have a benign impedance curve which makes them tube friendly. In absolute terms as regards to resolution and being a more transparent speaker, your GMs are the better speaker overall but they do represent a tougher load and are not the greatest match with your tube amps. So there are two ways to go:

1) Swap out the CC80s and get a SS amp that can double down from 8 to 4 to 2 ohms in terms of power output. If you like a tubish sound you can consider a Class A SS amp with at least 100wpc into 8 ohms (but again that doubles down as impedance is halved, meaning 200wpc into 4ohms and 400wpc into 2ohms).

2) Keep your Shindo gear and replace your SF GMs with tube-friendly speakers (soeakers with flat impedance). The Super 8s will mate well with your Shindo gear but my guess is moving up the DeVore line with your excellent Shindo gear will reveal even more of what they can do. Maybe look at the 88s (current version of the Super 8s) or better yet check out his new Gibbon X speakers (roughly $11K) or consider his O96 or his top of the line Silverback speakers. Of course there are many other tube-friendly brands of speakers you can check out: Harbeth (not most sensitive speakers but flat impedance curve and so if you don't listen at very loud volumes your CC80s will drive them great), Coincident Technology, Vaughn, Cain and Cain, Daedalus, Audio Note, Tannoy, and many other brands.

I'm located at Vancouver, BC. The 96 won't work for me due to logistic issue. Plus, I'm looking for a used pair in case I don't like the sound.

I'm staying with Shindo, so changing speakers will be the next step. Don't think any dealer around my area (Vancouver, BC) carries many high sensitivity speakers. So, I'm going by word of mouth. Since Devore is voiced using Shindo gears, it should work well by default.

Cyril I agree to everything you stated except for the "better resolution and transparency" of the GM.
The Super 8's have a terrific transparency and resolution. Just, they do not present the details like the GM. A bit like Shindo, the supreme transparency and very high resolution of the Super 8's are melted towards a "whole".
I have listened to the GM's at Dan's place. They sound very good. But I would not say "better speaker" than the 8's. Just 2 different philosophies.
I personally prefer the Super 8's over the GM. Plus the bass of the 8's is tighter and goes lower.
