Has anyone heard, or even seen...this elusive speaker? It's been on my radar, since I can't quite commit to Orangs (hard to give up conventional notions); but would love to try DeVore (been close to pulling the trigger, on 3XLs a few times).

Only thing I can glean...is every subsequent report I read, that they're coming; has the price creeping up (initially reported at $10k...then 11; now I'm reading 12).

I would imagine that with the introduction of the "O" series that everything else has been has been given "back burner" status. I bet John's focus is trying to keep up with production on the O's and has little time for anything else. There have also been rumors of another O speaker, possibly further up the line from the O96. Only time will tell...

Was the "X" meant to be a Silverback replacement? Given the Gibbon name I would think not but you never know. Also, I'm not sure who this speaker was meant to be for. It seems to get away from many of the ideas that his line is built around. You know, the low-powered amp crowd. Was this a speaker for those who have more power? Bigger rooms? Dunno... Maybe the whole project has been scrapped.

Can't say I agree with this entirely Doug. Yes, Orangs are definitely the focus...within the low-power/high-sensitivity crowd; but I think Gibbons have a good following too. Super 8s, 9, 88s, et al.

They're for people like me; who love the idea...of low-power/high-sensitivity. But don't quite have the bal...guts; to make it, their one and only system. ;)

Fair enough. Enjoy the wait. :)

I know, I know; I'm working on it ;)

For now...it's 30.1s; and they're hardly high-sensitivity. However...they respond well-enough, to modest powered glass. I'm just about to post in the Cary thread...that I had a moment of weakness, and bought an 808 (aka Rocket 88) R.

Probably just a "rental", on my way to a Pass .8; but we'll see.

From what I've been told, they are intended as a replacement for the Reference 9s.

There is a place near me that has the 3xl and the 88s that i need to get to for a listen. Have not see these beauties.

I had a chance to listen to the 88's and I did not like them as much as I like my Super 8's.

Chris,

Weird thing is, I've heard the same report from a friend of mine whom owns Reference 9s, and said they didn't compare to the Super 8s he heard during a stay in New York, while visiting In Living Stereo, he stated they sounded more Hi-Fi, if that makes any sense?, from where I sit on the wall........, I regretted not getting a pair of 3XLs when I had the funds - but I heard them through Naim separates and wasn't pleased at all, it wasn't until I heard though Leben and then Shindo had I realized my mistake.

And being the Mini-Monitor sort that I am, I still see/hear these as reference quality speakers regardless of price, they just have an uncanny way of drawing you into the notes themselves, and wondering..........,

" what if? ".

As always, live and learn from our mistakes, and not jumping on an Apetite as well.........., o_oh the pain of reality checks.

Yup the 88's sounded more "HIFI". MY super 8's pull me into to the tone of each note played, each string plucked etc...

Not to sat that the 88's were bad at all. They were great. They are just different from the Super 8's that I know and love.

It will be interesting to see how my new Auditorium Hommage LM755's compare to the Super 8's. I suspect that they will take all the aspects of the 8's that I love to a way higher level.

Maybe John will show up and comment but I had started a thread on the Gibbon Xs maybe a year and a half ago in the other forum and a few months ago someone followed up with a question and John actually answered him but I believe he said aiming to launch the X in back half of this year and most likely Q4 so maybe he does official launch at RMAF. I believe he said price was going to be closer to $15K now. I'll try to dig up his comments and post them here.

Well I just went to the other forum to look up his answers and unfortunately most of the info had been edited and or deleted by the moderator (whom we all know). I now remember that this caused a big fuss over there. In any case, John was answering a question about why the launch was delayed (and this I will relay below) and then got into the question of when he expects to launch it and the pricing, which again if memory serves me correctly, is going to be in the $15K range. He subsequently received a question on why the pricing was so close to the Silverback and proceeded to explain and shortly thereafter he realized that a lot of his answers to the pricing question and the sonic comparison to the Silverback were outright deleted. The explanation given was that this was deemed to be promoting his products and he wasn't an official sponsor (eventhough he was a paying member!). Which then prompted a whole host of folks to come in his defense and a few of them got banned (Cucumber Jones was one of those who got banned and he shortly signed up here thereafter).

In any case, as to the explanation for why it was taking so long to launch the Gibbon X, here is John's explanation quoted from the other site:

The problem is that our measurement system went down early last summer and we haven't been able to get it up and running again. Or replaced. The system is excellent and extremely capable, but it's based on old PC hardware. The ISA (I told you it was old hardware!) card itself was checked out and declared just fine my the manufacturer and I've had old-school WinTel experts here fiddling and squinting and telling me everything's fine with the PC.

In the mean time the manufacturer has announced a replacement measurement system that the industry is lining up for (I've got my deposit in for one of the first units) but it has been delayed a number of times. I hope to have it here in the next couple of months--fingers crossed.

this was edited down by moderator but was part of a longer explanation of what was causing the delays.

Specs of the speaker:

Basic preliminary specs are 91dB/W/M, 8 Ohms (7.25 min) and 23Hz-38kHz.

In any case, hopefully someone can invite John DeVore to this forum and he can chime in directly and he can rest assured that there is none of the heavy handedness here by moderators as I tpertains to him sharing information and answering questions about his products.
