DeVore Gibbon X

Any updates on this speaker? Interested and have seen at shows but nothing on availability or pricing that I've seen.

I got to finally demo the big Xs this past weekend.

I'm curious what other folks heard at RMAF/CES - to me they sounded like a big step forward.
 
well, I didn't find them to sound like the O96s at all that I've heard before - two totally different sounds.

Well they are not meant to sound the same. Two different design briefs. The Gibbons are meant to have a more neutral, modern sound, emphasizing detail, transparency, neutrality across frequency spectrum, and 3D imaging and staging.

Orangs are perhaps a more retro sound that emphasize midrange meatiness/tonal density, wide dynamics, and eschew things like pinpoint imaging.

I realize this may come across to fans as manufacturer rivalry/bashing, but I really wish specs were not over-inflated in such manner.
All passive speakers, like these, must obey Hoffmans Iron Law.
That means for real 23hz extension (-3db), the speaker would have to be the size (larger) and sensitivity (around 86-87db) of the Revel Salon, which actually does have really real world/measurable 23hz extension. This speaker does not appear to be that large, so something doesn't add up.
That doesn't mean it won't be the bees-knees for some, but the stated here specs are improbable. Tis all.

AJ- it isn't quoted at -3db...my guess is more like -6db based on the (10-year old) Silverback review. John has been pretty forthcoming and friendly concerning measurements in the past (except for crossovers which he feels are proprietary). He does divulge impedance curve information openly, which other companies often do not and I find a big deal. Revel does disclose more information than most which is nice (including impedance)....I'm just not personally interested in them.

cmalak- I would say that is a good description of what I heard. Impressive, extended but sweet soft dome tweeter with a more transparent midrange from memory. Soundstage was very, very large and quite deep (some of that was dealer setup) with excellent imaging. The speaker had a vivid and alive quality with good dynamics and didn't sound constipated. it's a worthy audition. the O/96 is a warmer, more intimate and toneful speaker that personally wasn't my cup of tea- diff strokes for diff folks!
 
New version may "look" more polished, but it makes setup more difficult. This appears to have been a change based on aesthetics more than sound. Just my take.
 
According to my dealer they also need plenty of power. He has them paired with some big mono VTL's. He compared them to the Silverback, only better.

I was at the same dealer a couple weeks ago and got to listen to the Devore X and VTL combo. It was impressive. Room filling sound with great extension on both ends with demanding presence. I have Devore Nines that I've had for about 4 years now. The sound compared to the Nines was definitely much larger in terms of sound stage and bass extension.

While I liked the sound because it reminded me of the Nines except with more power, I still preferred the sound of the Orangutans I auditioned a while back because of the coherence, organic quality, and realistic tone. Still, I'd love to spend more time with the X's with other amplification just to see how they do. They are also beautifully built like all Devore speakers. Not that much larger than the Nines. I could easily swap my Nines with the X's and my wife wouldn't notice...hey there's a thought..
