Lately been thinking about trying a the new CJ MF2550SE along with a CJ ET5 to compare to my devialet 400 setup. I'm a long time CJ fan. Any thoughts?

I am a big time CJ fan. Love their tube gear. So musical, a touch sweet with zero grain, tremendous 3D, awesome layering and depth.

I am sure the MF2550SE is a wonderful amp but looks so much like a McCormack design, I can't get it in my head that it's CJ piece now. From other forums like conradjohnsonowners.com and audiogon forum, those who have them, love them.

I am using the Devialet as a preamp out depending on what amp(s) that I want to use. It great that way because the dac/preamp is dead quiet, and sounds great though any amp that I've tried.

Jax...you know what "dream" amp, has popped into my head again recently?

Back when I was doing the C-J thing; this is where I was headed next. Hmmmm...

There's just something about CJ gear that turns my head.

CD, nice avatar!!!!

I cannot stay in a room where Devialet is playing more than 10 minutes.
I never heard CJ. But it just cannot be as bad as Devialet ! :D

Totally different presentation. Both offer pro's and con's (like with anything). You will give up the Devialet's outstanding bass control/bass definition, speed, dynamics and dead dead dead quiet backgrounds. You will gain tubey goodness and richness.

With the CJ, I guess you have also calculated you will need a preamp, DAC, cables, etc.?

jaxwired,

You will not find a definitive answer to your question here. The presentation of the equipment you want to compare is too different. You essentially asked whether members preferred chicken or beef, not whether they preferred white meat or dark meat or rib-eye vs T-bone. The real question is which do you prefer.

If your answer (and I suspect it is) some days you prefer beef and other days chicken. The answer to your question is simple. You need two systems. If that is not feasible then you will have to decide which diet you can live with every day. Or maybe a compromise--Devialet feeding a tube amp. aka surf & turf. You are wondering what happened to the chicken?

It crossed the road. BADABING :ignore::rolleyes: Sorry, my metaphor ran off the track.

What will always remain desirable? The classic or the current techno friendly model?

Joe, Does the Devialet run a lot cooler in the DAC/preamp only mode?

Doesn't seem to run any cooler, maybe a little. I have not checked the temperature read out but by feel, it seems the same to me. It works amazingly well as a dac/phono/preamp into other amps.

My analogy was nuns or hookers, but that's just the way my mind works. :D

I really like the Devialet stuff and have been using CJ gear since 1979 (PV-1 and MV-50 days) Love both, but for different reasons. I would suggest getting a Devialet demoed in your home with your speakers. If you have a pair that support the SAM processing, you might really enjoy it. And, if you're tired of a rack full of gear and all those cables, hanging a Devialet on the wall is mighty inviting.

I'd suggest at least giving it a listen. I've always come away impressed with Devialet, I just don't think it's as awesome as a few of the other hifi magazines have suggested. Very good, but not the best there is. More like a Boxster S than a GT3! :)
