Devialet 400 review by Soundstage Magazine

I've experimented with usb, coax, AIR and AES-EBU. Air sound terrific but is still buggy. Usb sound great too, but I HATE using a computer. Coax also sound great, although not quite as good as USB and AIR, but then again, I only have a crappy coax cable (a good one is one order) - ditto for AES/EBU (a better cable has been ordered). I'm also planning on trying BNC from my Lumin to AES/EBU using a $10 Neutrik 75ohm to 110ohm converter I found on eBay.

The Devialet experts over on Devialetchat feel that the AES/EBU is the best input. Air is second and usb/coax third.

Remember Mike , Ethernet is also an option on the Devialet . Gotta say AES/EBU gets a lot of positive push from the more reputable manufacturers - Berkeley , Vitus also prefer AES inputs.

Hi all,
my first post on AS.
when I trialed the D200 I felt my Audiophilleo 2 with PurePower improved the usb by a small margin - a little smoother and natural sounding. As it plugs straight into the coax socket, the back plate couldn't be installed with AP2 in place.

I've tried AIR via Wifi, USB and AES/EBU.

I prefer the USB and AES/EBU.

My two digital sources are:
PS Audio PWT, Audience Au24 SE AES/EBU
Networked Auraliti PK90 w/linear PSU, Nordost Blue Heaven USB

BTW, as I've posted over on Devialet Chat, the Devialet's USB input doesn't need to see the +5VDC. My PK90 allows me to turn it off.

I'll be building a RCA to AES/EBU cable to try between the master and companion. Since the Devialet's digital inputs are transformer coupled, the important thing is using 110 ohm cable for the link.

Is there any way to go HDMI to any of the Devialet inputs?

Mike,

Please ask the Lumin guys for the pinout schematics of their HDMI digital out. This will enable us to know what is compatible. And boutique guys like Lampi could adapt an HDMI terminal to be compatible, if they get a demo unit to test with (for chipless DSD).

Tha D-Premier has a HDMI input. This was dropped in newer units in favour of USB and Ethernet.
There are HDMI to toslink converters available on Amazon, whether they add jitter I don't know.

Very interesting. Thanks.

I'm puzzled with Devialet, it up samples all it's music cd's etc. and I like it but when I use to have the MSB dac I hated listening to up sampled cd's.:hmmm:

John.

It is a conundrum indeed. Probably because of the system integration is so tight, everything is optimized. I am so happy with my D400. It's amazing and so musical.

The up sampling in the MSB DAC was probably done on an off the shelf ASRC chip (Asynchronous Sample Rate Converter), while the Devialet writes their own up sampling code on a FPGA (field-programmable gate array).

Isn't upsampling like the Tooth Fairy anyway? Conversion processes don't come without sonic penalties and you don't get to create or add more bits of resolution to an existing file than what it was recorded with. It kind of reminds of arguing about whose implants look the most real.

Now I'm a expert at that. Years of motor boating :P
