Devialet 200 Heat

In this configuration, after an hour+, the Dev gets very hot: 100F on top of unit, 127F side, 57C Menu. This is playing TV sports or old movie- low load. Running Digital 1 music loud, the unit just gets warm. I've adjusted Configuration to match Anthem level (3.5 Vrms) and set By Pass to 0 Unity Gain, with no change in heat. Turned off SAM which helped a little.
Anyone else seeing this heat; running as Pass Thru? Thoughts?
 
Some have mentioned that the units run a little warm as they are breaking in and run a little cooler afterwards. How long have you had it?
 
Maybe 50 hours on it. But it runs only warm now on digital music though hot through Line input with receiver pre outs.
 
From what I understand, break in can take 200 hours, maybe more. If you could provide some room around it for airflow, I would not be too concerned right now. I'd just keep plenty of space around it and see what happens once you are past several hundred hours.
 
They do seem to run hotter when new. Also they do run hotter when bypassing at unity gain I believe though I haven't tried this myself. I had concerns about the temperature of mine and recently heard back from Devialet who told it can run temperatures of 67C (152F) without damage. The more recent firmwares have addressed some of the high temperature running too and it was worse! It is a little disconcerting though. I had heatsinks on top of mine over last summer which were pretty hot to touch but didn't seem to make any difference to the sound quality.
 
I notice the same thing. Over 60 C is common when watching DVD's/BluRay or amplifying the TV.
Does'n't seem to have any adverse effect.
Also I believe that there is thermal cutout protection should temperatures approach damaging levels.

By contrast, listening to music via my usb connected server allows for very cool running with mid 40's temperatures even at higher listening levels.

When my unit was a D170 it ran considerably cooler. I guess the extra 30w pushes the D200 closer to it's thermal limit.
Also I feel (but haven't verified) that SAM also makes it run a bit hotter.

D200 needs plenty of free space around it to help shed some of that heat. I'm thinking of adding some "feet" to elevate it in the hope that it might help cooling.
 
If it's running cooler at higher listening levels, could that be because it's a partial class A design? Class A designers run cooler the harder you push them.

That's a good point Mike. I do listen at quite low levels.

I use Stillpoint Ultra SS under my Devialet. To be honest I'm not convinced it makes any difference to the sound quality but it does raise it up! The bottom of the D200 is plastic so not a great material for dissipating vibrational energy through. I'm guessing SPs would work better on a D250?

On the D-amps one can monitor the temperatures of the A-amp, the D-amp and the Supply.
Right now I have been listening via my usb connected server at -16dB for the last hour or so and temps are 44, 40 and 45 degrees C.
In my system, in my room -16dB is moderately loud.

However, if I amplify the TV via the D200 then -16dB wouldn't be loud at all. I would need to crank it up considerably to achieve that same "moderately loud" level.
Similarly with DVD/BluRay played via an Oppo 95, depending upon the disc -16dB is a relatively quiet listening level. When the family and I watch a movie we are well into single digit territory and at the end of the movie I might see 62, 58 and 63 degrees C.

The A-amp, D-amp and Supply are all mounted on the same heatsink (the chassis) so heat from one will tend to be shared across. This would be why the temps for A, D and Supply are always fairly close.

I forgot that the bottom of the D200 is plastic.

So, presumably, there would be little benefit to raising the unit as an aid to cooling.

I have a couple of large heatsinks which virtually cover the whole top of the unit. I'm not using them right now but did in the summer. The fins were pretty warm to the touch so I'm guessing quite effective.
