Investing On The Very Best
Yes, $28,000 is a great deal of money to spend on a phono preamplifier. It's a great deal of money to spend on anything. I know for a fact that there are audiophiles that would consider the D'Agostino phono preamplifier a bargain, at least when it is compared to some others -- since one can spend twice as much on a phono preamplifier if they want. Still, it seems to me that the D'Agostino Master Audio phono preamplifier is reasonably priced when one considers what went into designing this preamplifier, when one considers what goes into building this phono preamp, and especially when one hears what this phono preamplifier is capable of when playing one's records through it. If I had the money I would purchase this phono preamp without a second thought. It isn't perfect, as it lacks a remote control and only has one output. The Dan D'Agostino is the current champ, though, and therefore is highly recommended to all that can afford it. And even to those who can't.

I've been living with this baby for a while now, and I knew it was good, so I'm glad to see the reviews corroborating my impressions :)

cheers,
Alex

I would love to listen to the Dag phono stage. However $28,000 for a phono stage is not what I call a bargin or reasonable.

Alex, if I could buy it at dealer cost of 14k - that I could do :D

Ha, if only that was the dealer cost...
Anyway, I think the pricing is in line with the other products in the Momentum line, and also in line with the (very unfortunate, if you ask me...) surging prices across the entire audio industry... This is the industry with $15k cartridges and $30k tonearms and $100k turntables, after all :(
I would've loved Dan to put this out as a $10k or even $15k unit... But I guess he can't... But again, this is a statement level product, 3 boxes, so while the price is "up there", it's also comparable to what other manufacturers are asking...
If you have the chance to listen to it, do it :)

Hi Alex

Everything is relative I guess.

Btw, how do you hear the sonic differences between the Dag stereo s200 and new s250 amp?

Cheers

Yes, just today I became aware of another phono stage, $31k plus another $10-odd for the optional power supply... Makes the D'Agostino look like a bargain :)

The S250 upgrade is a no brainer. With big speakers such as yours, you'll appreciate the little extra headroom. That often translates into a little more "ease", a more relaxed presentation.

BTW lovely cartridge collection!

My dealer loves this preamp. He replaced his ARC Ref 10 with it in his home rig.

Looking at the interior, I wonder what makes it so expensive other than "other manufacturers charge even more for their stuff, so the price is justified"; that chunky chassis must be really expensive to produce.

I highly doubt it's really any better than say an Audionet PAM G2 (which is also upgradable with their external PSUs).

Anatta,

The D'Agostino is actually 3 boxes. A "dirty/noisy" bit, that goes close to the wall/outlet, and far from the rack. Then, that bit that looks like a stand but isn't, is the power supply. Then the top module is the control bit, with the inputs/outputs.
But it's funny you mention the Audionet PAM G2, as we have that very same unit here in the store, with the external PSU as well! With the external PSU, it's $20k, closer to the D'Agostino but not quite.

cheers,
Alex

I saw its 3 box construction.

The standalone PAM G2 is Euro 5k in Germany with another 5k for the EPX PSU; the D'Agostino phono is even more expensive in Europe than the $28k price mentioned.

Anatta,

The (german) Audionet is more expensive here in the US, and the (american) D'Agostino is more expensive in Germany... Oh well...
