I would like to hear from those who have heard the Alexia's (or any Wilson speaker) with D'Agostino and VTL Siegfried II. Which do you prefer and why?

Hi Mike,

I have listened to the Wilson Alexandria XLF with the D'Agonstino mono blocks for about an hour an Innovative Audio in NYC. Couldn't have been less impressed with the sound. I have heard the Alexia with the Siegfried Series 2 and that was quite a bit better in my view. A friend of mine has also heard the Alexia with the D'Agonstino mono blocks. He was less than impressed as well. You might give Innovative in NYC a call to discuss - they are dealer for all 3 brands. If you are going to RMAF, i would guess that VTL would be showing with Wilson so you could hear for yourself.

Thanks Arnie! I'm going to hear Alexia/D'Agostino (again) in Dallas and then Alexia/VTL in Denver this week.

Arnie - I will add one thing....HEAT is a concern for me. I loved the Pass XA160.5's, but they melted me out of my room. Now, my ARC REF250's did not. So I'm wondering about the heat output of the REF250's vs Siegfried amps. I live in Florida and we do everything to AVOID the heat - not make it worse!

Hi Mike,

If you are going to Audio Concepts in Dallas - that is pretty funny. That is where my friend heard the Alexia/D'Agonstino combo.

If you have time, feel free to come down to Austin and have a listen to the Siegfrieds.

Thanks Arnie - I will only be in Dallas for a day...otherwise I would love to come down. Can I take a rain check?

I hear you about the heat. I used to live in South Florida and now I live in Austin, TX so its pretty toasty in the summers here. I used to own Ref 210's. I would say that the Siegfried's put a little more heat than the Ref 250's since I think the Ref 250's are 8 KT120's per mono block and the Siegfrieds are 12 KT88's per mono block. So, 8 more power tubes in total - a little more heat but not as much as the Pass XA 160's as those getting really hot.

You are welcome any time. Hopefully we can meet at RMAF as I would be curious to get your impressions of what you hear.

I've never heard the Siegfrieds with the Alexias but I have heard some VTL amp with them and it sounded good. I've also heard the Dags sound good with the Alexias.

My guess it is personal preference as to which is better.

Never been impressed by the Wilson VTL room at RMAF. If Dan's amps aren't what you are looking for there are many other options.

Dan's amps are incredible. The VAC was also good. I look forward to hearing VTL myself. Jim, what didn't you like about VTL? Did you prefer VAC or neither?

Mike, I do not recall hearing Wilson's with VAC gear so I have no opinion. The VTL room has never seemed to have any pace to the music and the highs were lacking.

Mike, I heard the VTL S400 IIs on the Alexias, a better match than most SS amps on them, not as thin, great soundstage. I didn't hear the same music, but the Alexias with Doshi amps might have even been better? You were there at RMAF, what did you think of the Wilson's with valves? I remember that VTL had $108,000 of Transparent Opus speaker cables on the Alexias.

The Alexia's with VTL was not to my liking. Frankly, it was downright awful. I went to that room 8 or 9 times. It just seemed worse every time. The Doshi room was much better.

However, I've decided to go with a pair of Magico S5's instead. I can use the price difference to buy some nice gear, cables, etc., etc. and I don't think I'll suffer. :)

Mike, The S5s are a great choice, I heard the S1s in the Hegel room, relaxing yet detailed, engaging, elegant sounding.

Thanks. That was a good room and the Hegel gear surprised me. Really nice stuff.
