I am not certain whether this is an area that has ever been covered in the Forum but I was interested in opinions from Sharks who have some experience of the D'Agostinos on the synergy or lack thereof between the Dag's & Magico's . I know they typically tend to show with Wilson but I have also seen the odd review of a D'Agostino-Magico pair up. Thanks for the advice!!

I tried my Dags with my S5's and it was quite good. But my favs are (in no particular order): Vitus, Pass, Soulution, VAC and after CES, big CAT amps with those KT150's. Yummy!

If your room can handle the heat, big tube amps on Magico's are special.

You know, I kind of have a hunch Myles has what may be one of the best combos: CJ ART MONOS and Magico.

One other amp I would love to hear on Magico's would be the ARC GS150. It would be up there in one of the best amps I've ever heard.

Thanks Mike, a fount of knowledge as always....

CAT has scared me off pretty permanently after I heard horror stories about endless repair backlogs, missed deadlines , flakey customer service and the fact that blown tubes used to necessitate a return to the Factory ...of a 250 lb monobloc. My Pass X250.5's were probably the worst amp I have ever heard on my Q3's , couldn't wait to get rid of those beasts. Need to investigate CJ & Soulution. And so it goes....

Appreciate the opinions.

I can tell people until I'm blue in the face - the X series isn't the magic series - it's the POWER series. XA and XS is the magic. It's no different with Vitus, Accuphase and others. The magic is in Class A (and tubes of course).

Sorry Mike , I meant my XA-200.5's - just never worked not just in my judgement but also that of by some pretty sophisticated audiophiles as well. And this was with their XP-30 linestage.

Shodhan,

I'm on your camp. Pass and Magico Q-series is not a good match, at all.
I also have a Q3, but unfortunately I haven't heard the D'Agostinos with them. Would be fun, though! I can tell you, though, that the match with the big YGs is fantastic, and Dan actually bought 2 pairs of YGs for his development. Since Magico Q-series and YG have more than a couple of things in common, I thought you might want to know...
As for tubes, you're lucky to own the most tube-friendly Magico that I know of, so you might investigate stuff from 50W on, depending on the size of your room, of course...

cheers,
alex

Well, I never heard those on the Q3's, so I'll take your word for it. I do know that Pass on Magico - generally - is excellent. I've heard S3 and S5's with Pass XA and thought it was excellent.

I guess the better question is what do you want from an amp for your Q3's? Some warmth and tonality richness of tubes? Some speed and linearity from solid state like Soulution?

It is probably worth noting, that Magico S and Q series sound very different to each other. I have the S5, but never really developed a liking for the Q3 ...

Probably the best amp I've tried with my S5s was the Vitus SM-11 monos. But MSB monos are not that much behind and much cheaper, especially used.

I tried a GS 150, Ref 10 and DCS stack with a pair of S7 last Friday, although it sounded pretty good it was put to shame by a pair of Ayre MX-R'S (old version) when they were used as replacement. To my ears they just were just more musical. YMMV

Yes, Ayre! That's a great idea to try with Magico. Thanks for the feedback.
