Have run a Hafler DH200 since the early 1980's. Am considering new system to include replacement amplifier coupled with a DAC.
It's my understanding that tube pre amps/ a DAC with tube, produces an analog sound.
If a tube preamp is employed, would it negate need to have a tube in a DAC?

Welcome!

It all depends on the amp, dac and preamp you want to use. Some tube components are "warmer or sweeter" than others. Like everythng else, balance is the key. Some tube preamps are more solid state sounding. Some are very warm.

What brands and models are you looking at? What amp? What speakers?

I have a pair of Epos M16i speakers. I am considering purchase of the Marantz HD-DAC1, and the Jolida JD1501 BRC.
Jolida also makes a DAC that incorporates tubes, however not sure that would be required if DAC is inputting into a tubed preamp.
Any thoughts?

My personal opinion is that the Marantz dac will be absolutely wonderful and in combination with the JD1501, will be more than enough warmth/sweetness. I have not heard the HD-DAC1 but have owned a Marantz network player that was awesome. I miss that Marantz player.

Personally I like to add tubes at the preamp stage to get the desired effect. Not as many DACs on the market that use tubes so your choices may be limited. Have you considered updating your DH200 with a Musical Concepts mod? You already have the basis of a great amp with the Hitachi MOSFETs on the output.

I think the Jolida integrated uses 2 pcs. 12AX7 for the preamplifier section.

Doing the mod on his current piece makes sense too.

Back in the day I built several Haller amps. The DH200 was a wonderful amplifier. If I recall correct it was replaced by the DH220 which was one of my favorite amplifiers. It is great that it is running fine for you all these years!

You after getting a great recommendation here. I have a John Hillig modified Hafler DH500 with his PA-6 elite mod package and it is fantastic.

Definitely worth the money!
