I recently purchased a pair of Cub Series 1 speakers. I have never owned Wilson Audio speakers before. What is their support like?

I sent the following in an email to Trent at Wilson Audio over the weekend and have not gotten a response;

I recently purchased a used (obviously) pair of Cub Series 1. They sound a bit "off" so I decided to measure them. Things I have done;

  1. Played 1.8khz-20khz pink noise to verify the tweeters were working. They are.
  2. Measured the in room response as a pair and it had a couple of significant dips, one at 250hz-600hz and another from ~3khz to ~14khz with a sharp rise to 20khz.
  3. I placed one of the speakers so that the tweeter was ~55" of the floor centered in the room and ran a scan with a calibrated mic about 1 meter a way on the tweeter access. When I gated the measurement at 5ms the low freq dip went away but the high freq dip remained and it was anywhere from 6 - 10db down.
  4. Using a multimeter I measured the resistance at the test points on the back of each speaker. One measure ~2.4 ohms the other ~3.6 ohms. What I have found online is they should be ~1 ohms. However I could not find anything which describes the tolerance, or what differing values mean.

A few questions;

  1. Are there any further troubleshooting steps I should do?
  2. Where can I find the meaning of the resistance values on the test points.
  3. Is this dip in the treble a standard "voicing" on these speakers?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Those speakers are 25-30 Years old. Not sure who at Wilson even remembers them. The technology is outdated at best.
OK, they are certainly not in their current line up. Should I at least expect a courtesy reply saying they are no longer supported?

If I can't get support from the company, I am not opposed to doing a little DIY analysis and perhaps repair, if there are any forums which may support folks like me.

25-30 years would be long enough that the crossover capacitors and resistors to be out of spec. Worth taking a peak at the crossover board. The chokes should be ok. If the internal wires are attached to the speaker elements with clips, those are worth removing, cleaning, and reattaching. Be sure to save, and re-apply sound deadening elements.

Hopefully Wilson will answer back. They have been around a long time. Many small companies have service call delays during the summer, even in the USA.

DIYAudio.com would be a great site to look at, and search for any Wilson Speaker owner forums.

Does anyone have experience/pointers on Cub Series 1 disassembly? There are two "boxes" on the rear of each speaker and plugs covering a plethora of screws on the back panel. Are these screws to remove the back panel, and gain access to the crossover?

I could not find a service manual, and I have not heard back from Wilson Audio. If someone has an email address different from those on their website I could try, that would be great..

Try contacting Danny

https://gr-research.com/

He might know more about these speakers, and can probably get them fixed up.

He has a forum section at audiocircle.com and has offered advice, and fixed many older speakers.

Not sure if anyone can fix a speaker driver if a replacement is not available anymore, but there are a few stories.
