Creating a budget high-end set

Nah...been there..done that...LOL..I feel like I as a pain in the ass in this thread and don't want to be a thread crapper ..shudder..The original poster was doing "good" and I just boggled a bit about budget...its all relative...:D

Carry on good people...lOL

You're no pain, no one here is. We are all so relaxed here that we're simply not used to it yet! :D
Let's give ourselves more time, and love. ;)

I am thinking about buying a pair of these for fun. The design is based on the M2 pro speakers. These hooked up to my EAR Acute III or even my Metric Halo LIO-8 DAC should be outstanding.

Bi-amplified Studio Monitor with Magnetically-Shielded 8” Low Frequency Transducer and 1” Soft-Dome High Frequency Transducer and Image Control Wave Guide. Class-D 56 Watt RMS Amplifier for LF, and 56 Watt RMS Amplifier for HF. Balanced XLR and ¼” TRS Inputs with Detented Level Control, HF and LF Trim Controls.
Features : Specifications :

Image Control Waveguide:
• The Image Control Waveguide was developed for JBL’s new flagship
M2 Master Reference Monitor and with the introduction of the JBL
3 Series, is now included for the first time in an affordable, compact
reference monitor.
• The patent-pending design of the Image Control Waveguide precisely
controls the sound emanating from the speaker in the vertical and
horizontal planes ensuring the presentation at the listening position
is neutral and accurate.

JBL Transducers are legendary for their performance. The 3 Series long-throw woofer and its damped woven composite Neodymium tweeter are designed from the ground up to reproduce the powerful transients and micro dynamics of your mix. These drivers deliver impressive deep bass and smooth high frequency response beyond the range of human hearing.

JBL’s Patented Slip Stream™ low frequency port design works in concert with the woofer to produce deep bass response at all playback levels. The double-flared shape of the port is precisely engineered for greater low-frequency extension and reduced turbulence.

Big Power, Big Sound - 3 Series efficient Class D Amplifiers provide abundant power to deliver the output and dynamic headroom needed for the most demanding production styles

Professional Balanced Inputs - Balanced XLR and 6 mm TRS inputs give you the options you need to connect your 3 Series to any signal source while maintaining professional signal quality.

Selectable Input Sensitivity - The -10 dB/+4 dB sensitivity switch ensures compatibility with a broad range of signal sources, allowing you to connect the 3 Series to high output professional gear without any danger of input overload.

LF Trim and HF Trim “TRIM” switches for both the Low and High Frequencies give you excellent control over the 3 Series sound in “your” room. Use these to fine-tune the amount of bass and treble you hear to compensate for room acoustics, program material and your personal taste.

JBL Professional Reliability - Prior to becoming a production-ready design, each 3 Series model is subjected to JBL’s tough 100 hour power test, in which the speaker is required to play continually at full output for 100 hours without failure. This demanding test ensures your 3 Series speakers will deliver years of reliable performance.

JBL LSR Design - Your Music Needs a Point of Reference - While most manufacturers take only a single on axis measurement of the speaker’s performance, this doesn’t tell how it will sound in your room. JBL’s LSR Linear Spatial Reference design criteria requires seventy-two measurements yielding more than 1,200 times more data, enabling JBL to engineer a speaker that “sounds right” in any working space. With LSR design, 3 Series Studio Monitors deliver superior accuracy regardless of the size and shape of your room, so your mixes “hit their mark” when heard on any playback system.

Deep Pedigree - The impressive performance of the 3 Series Reference Monitors is the result of JBL’s development of its flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor. Learn more about the M2 at Untitled Document

That could be very interesting Joe. Did you compare to the Neumann and the Focal? I went to this mega store to compare probably more than 30 different monitors and these two brands came out on top. But surely the JBL will sound great too. I think it is amazing what they get out the compact speakers nowadays. And for money that would be barely enough to get a brochure in our consumer based high-end audio world.
:exciting:

EVEN €500 SEEMS A GOOD PRICE FOR A WAVE GUIDED MONITOR.

Any feedback on S-Quality?

Recall that the true price in the US is with sales tax, so add onther say 7%, so $30. In EU the 20% VAT is included, so the real price is €400, so $550.

$430 to $550 is still a wide difference, ie 25%.

Maybe Joe did a thorough sound check. I must have heard them when I chose my monitors. I was in this shop:
DJ studio monitor? Vind je DJ monitor bij Bax-shop They have three studios with the monitors in three pricing categories. I checked them all and easily selected the Focal's and Neumann as the best sounding. So I didn't pay a lot of attention to the JBL's. But hey, they are less than half the money!

That price ($400 US) includes shipping and no tax out of state. There might even be further discounts available.

I have not heard them but have a friend with the JBL M2's and he loves them. You can't expect miracles for $400US but I can't help believe they'd be wonderful.

Joe I am sure you will have a lot of fun. And that is what you said originally: you want to buy them for fun!:P
And also with these speakers you will be surprised how good they are for the money. When I was in that shop that is specialized in music instruments etcetera you wonder why these speakers are not marketed as domestic audio.

I believe these little JBL speakers hooked up directly to my Metric Halo LIO-8 dac they will sound great. They are on backorder right now.

BTW..read the reviews on the AON 3's...awesome...
Rob,
I am sorry if you feel misplaced. I enjoy the discussion and I think it is OK to disagree. Also I appreciate your contribution. The AON's are definitely fitting in the original plan :eyebrow: It reminds me of the air motion transformer of the Adam's...
I surely hope you will change your mind and contribute again.
Hans
