That is a really good question asked recently that Mr Biden has easily side stepped and finger pointed when in fact it was his administration that did not re-prepare us.

You do know the current administration was inaugurated in 2017 and not in 2019 or 2020, right?

Will not say more because this thread cannot go Political here.

Yet, you’re the one consistently drawn to making a political comment whenever there is a chance.

It's kind of hard for anyone or country to plan for the unknown.
.....

Experts in the field of contagious diseases have warned us for years about our country’s unpreparedness in case of a pandemic. For example, Look up in YouTube TedTalks by Bill Gates (2015) and Larry Brilliant (2006). For decades we have planned for wars, nuclear wars even. We failed to act and plan when we had time to do so. Quite simply, we dropped the ball.

How may examples do you need to refute your statement -- let me give a few -- South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Denmark, Iceland. Even India (a third world country) has taken decisive steps to try and stem the outbreak.
In regards to USA, it was not just hard but impossible for our current administration to have planned for this -- a more incompetent, lazy and heartless administration I cannot imagine.

By the way Johnson & Johnson just got a deal for Vaccines.

Here we go with more political nonsense and hatred on an audio forum. This isn’t CNN or MSNBC. This is an audio forum. Keep this nonsense up and you will blow up AS.

Let’s all try to keep the politics out of things. There is enough going on that we don’t need politics too. Let’s stick to the science and try to all get through this alive.

You would think after 12K died from Swine Flu in 2009/10 we would be better prepared , but with yearly flu death numbers exceeding even that lofty number most in our Government are not prioritizing and preparing..

obviously most of that will will change now ....

BTW: Bill gates ... :)

Bend over , spread ass cheeks , see anything resembling our last admin ... :)

Unfortunately it is all politics right now. What we know (and don't know) about the virus and the illness it causes is insignificant compared to the social and economic upheaval occuring right now. Perhaps even more notable is the number of "know-nothings" posting here about things they know nothing about. There is already enough misinformation out there from nominally reputable sources; this topic will not serve to filter that out, it will only reinforce it.

You are a physician. Did you watch the interview with the head of the South Korean force fighting the CV (a link was posted a couple of days ago)? Granted, you are ER not an epidemiologist, but if you have a chance to watch it may be helpful for some of us to hear your take on it. I hope that that is not what you are referring to as misinformation.

I think that is an excellent summation. It illustrates my point above, that the main problems we are facing now are social and political, not scientific or medical (except in the sense that our health care systems are being overwhelmed). It should be obvious that the measures which have helped to control the outbreak in S. Korea can't work here for any number of reasons (although I think they could have, if the political will to do so early had been there). He also points out the relative futility of counting on a vaccine to have a significant impact on the current situation.

Even J&J said in the article I linked that a useable vaccine will not be ready until early next year. It is being fast tracked but still has to go thru close to normal processes.

And you are so right with this..."the main problems we are facing now are social and political, not scientific or medical"

And the whole world should be outraged and doing something about this

A vaccine may never happen. As was mentioned in the video, the typical development time for a viral vaccine is 18 years, and in the last 50 years the only really usable, effective viral vaccine developed is the varicella vaccine. We still have not been able to develop and manufacture an effective influenza vaccine despite decades of work. Ebola, HIV, Dengue, etc, still in development.
