'Cloud Atlas'

We saw the film several moths ago.

Great cast, horrible movie. WAAAAAY too long.

I got the message after the first half hour. Fine, everything is connected. It's bull$#!T

It would have been fine as a 1/2 hour TV show.

It was NOT artistic. It was oevrdone and repetitive--just like Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.

Just how many times do the author's think they have to repeat essentially the same scene in a different time frame to have the viewer "get it?"

DON'T see it. It's a waste of time.

It is indeed quite a long movie Gary (172 minutes).

And it has several stories, from different time periods, happening all at the same time (on our screen), and directly related! ...Certainly not for everyone. ...Could be too complex for few.

BUT! Some people, different than you and I, can find a certain 'refuge' in it, I truly believe.

This is the perfect example that represents what audio is for different audiophiles.
Videophiles also come in all shapes and forms, and different level of emotions could be felt. .... ;)
{The journey is not the same for all of us, and the destination even less...}

BUT! We're all going to die, and others will be born.

The end is quite something too, in its ultimate message's conveyance. ...I can totally dig it!
Actually it is very closely related to my own life's philosophy; the ultimate and real karma.
...In time, space, and dimension.

Midnight in Paris could have been such a good movie but you nailed it on the head.

Thanks for the info. on Cloud Atlas also.

Lol

* Ron, just see 'Cloud Atlas' when it comes out on Blu or DVD, and you might enjoy the ride.
If I thought it wouldn't have any merit, you wouldn't be reading this post in this thread.

The thing, often with me, is I ask questions first, wait for comments, respect them all, then say what I have to say.
Other times it's completely the other way around; but then if someone doesn't agree, often they just don't say.

All I want is sharing, and sharing is conversing.
And no two people love or hate the same music recording or film for the exact same reason(s).

Mmmm, perhaps Gary knows more than me about Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'.

Was it a good film Gary? What's your take on it, and also on Woody Allen in general; as a movie director, and in real life?

My daughter and I went out for dinner one time in particular about a year ago and we were discussing movies we had seen. We had both seen Midnight in Paris and I asked her what she thought. Her response was that it would have been an excellent short story--which jived perfectly with my statement that it would have made a good half hour tv show. The concept was fine, but it doesn't take as long as the movie was to drive the point home. Likewise for Cloud Atlas. Interestingly in Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson (male lead) spoke with the same vocal intonations and inflections as Woody Allen when he was in his movies--a characteristic I am sure was desired by Woody Allen. I can't speak for Woody Allen in real life except to say that kink and fetishes are fine, but I don't see any way I could bring myself to have a sexual relationship with an adopted daughter.

As far as Woody Allen is concerned, I haven't enjoyed of some of his recent movies. His older ones were brilliant. In recent years, his film "Match Point" was terrific and you should see that where ever you can. It was a serious murder mystery.

Nice of you Gary to share some thoughts like that and about your daughter's viewpoint as well.

Lol, you brought up 'Midnight in Paris' from Woody Allen into a funny 'time lapse' comparison with 'Cloud Atlas'. ...I like that.

Comparing a film within itself, that, is my forte.
...Against another film(s); just not the same, too complex, and simply not equilateral.

'Cloud Atlas' "is too long and keep repeating itself". I see your point, and I wonder... I wonder if roughly 165 minutes can seem too long for some. ...And indeed I agree, but then my mind changed when nearing the end. ...And I ultimately found myself satisfied, amply satisfied, and so much so, that it deserves another viewing but this time from the Blu-ray coming soon.
With films, like with anything else in life, I am extremely patient. ...And it always paid off at the end. ...Even when I get nothing out of it myself, because someone else did, and that, I can see too.
But here I got something for myself, and if I did, perhaps someone else can too.

Count on me, I'll get back on this; when the Blu-ray comes.

As more passing time goes by, the more this film has a greater impact on me.
This is something I am discovering almost every single day now, and only from one single viewing a while back.

Now, that is the power of certain films on some of us, with their messages.
...Like some books. ...And like music too, with our own imagination.

...And our pasts, our presents, our futures, our dreams, our loves, our lives, our aspirations, our children, our wars, our peaces, and all that equilibrium jazz.

I hardly ever see anything a second time. I also don't record TV shows that I might miss or to see them again because there is always something new to see and there just isn't enough hours in the day to see it all. I'm NOT retired and have to work for a living!

I am free, and cinema is big in my life. ...And I'm a sucker for analyzing films and everything in them if they are worthy.
With films I travel in time and discover new frontiers and different ways of thinking, and new faces and I want to understand the message(s) behind the cameraman, the movie director, the scriptwriter.
I learn about man's history in time and from various places and mentalities.
I look with the eye of an artist though the eyes of the masters of cinema and storytelling. ...Painting their masterpieces on moving canvas, right in front of our very eyes.
...And with accompanied music.

I understand perfectly well your own view Gary, and I have 100% total respect for it.
...The way movies are for you, with your own dedicated time, etc.
Our life's philosophies have some' in common; the journey to get there and how, are the only/mainly different aspect. ..And that is very cool indeed; just the way most of my very good friends see it too, just like you.

I've been a critic all my life; and I feel comfortable in expanding and in analyzing and in understanding. ...Everything. It's just who I am, and I practice it everyday.
