Cleaning the chrome on tube amplifiers

My McIntosh MC275s (the chrome) are picking up some dust and mild grime and I want to clean them.

Dry cloth only or some special polish?

I am guessing you remove the tubes!

Did you call McIntosh and ask them, they are usually pretty responsive. My chrome Quicksilvers I just use a non abrasive creame like Simichrome Polish of course if your pretty chrome parts on your Mac have writing on them, most stuff will take the writing off. Work around it.

Put some methylated spirits/white spirits on a rag, apply elbow grease. I will dissolve anything oil based & remove without streaking.

I use Isopropyl Alcohol and a micro fibre cloth. preferably a jeweller grade cloth.

Be gentle, you can scratch if using a rough cloth and don't dissolve the grime layers gradually.

Using LCD monitor cleaning solution can help lift oiler particulates.

You should clean at least once a year to avoid the risk or longer term pitting.
