This week my new Clayton Audio M200’s came in. These are a custom version of these amps built at my request. Among many upgrades on these the power supply has been greatly upgraded and capacitance is up from 180000uf per mono to 360000uf per mono.

Being fed from a Jeff Rowland Corus pre and feeding the very hungry Arteluthe Stiletto speakers the overall match is absolutely fantastic.

At 200 watts all class A and this much capacitance these little nuclear reactors can launch a transient attack from a spooky black background as well executed as anything I have heard in my system , and up with the best I have heard in this regard. Further , they can sustain a Crescendo like nothing I have every had. My previous Gamut was pretty explosive but sometimes would just sorta “flatten out” on a persistent Crescendo . Never distort or clip, just loose that last bit of zing...

The Clayton’s just keep going.

While a boutique brand I can say these amps are truly fantastic .

I have the M300s and I’m also very pleased with the balanced and authoritative Class A sound I’m getting. Truly an underrated line of amps.

Congratulations on your new amps. I always wanted to hear them. Enjoy in great health!

Thank you!...

I’m not sure how good my health will be when wifey sees the hydro bill from these little nuclear reactors !

Congrats

I've heard a few models of Clayton, they do sound very good. Your upgrades were worth what you had to pay. Although standard models sound great they have been known to strubble some with difficult load. I found that surprising but nevertheless true.

Trivia, Clayton is in St. Louis County

I have heard this struggle to be true. It was part of my homework and ultimately the decision to pay to get the upgrades.

That said , while the Arteluthe speakers are very hungry at 82db one of the things that mitigated the worry was that while tough to drive on paper they are effectively stable speakers at 8ohms

The amps are still breaking in but they certainly don’t have any problems driving the speakers.

What is very interesting is that I had a fairly long listening session the other night and felt I wasn’t listening that loud. I got my dB meter out and I was peaking at around 93db . I usually listen at volumes no louder than say 78-82 dB ( more or less)

I was utterly gobsmacked the music was that loud as it simply did not have any tells like grain , or stunted dynamics distortion what ever.

While that is something to be mindfull of it probably speaks well for the amp speaker matchup

Had a pair of upgraded M70's. They had the typical transformer hum/buzz associated with Clayton amps.
Besides that they were very good.
If yours are quiet then you've got some nice amps. Enjoy.

I read they had some issues in the past and many online forum reports that this was resolved .... no hum what so ever .

In fairness the dealer up here in Canada addresses this in my initial inquiries. He indicated the issues were long gone, evidently this is the case .
