Lots of options with the Classic line of preamps.

There is the 'Classic' vs the 'Classic 2'.

Then there is the stock unit vs the 'SE' units.

Anyone compared a Classic 2 SE to the original Classic?

Any comment on these pre's welcome.....

Just my 2cents on this issue, having owned the original classic, classic SE, then moved on to ET3SE.

The original classic didn't use 6922, which limited a bit the amount of tweaking one could do, considering there are dozens of 6922 choices.
not having owned the Classic2 however, I'm speaking from a pure ASSumption point of view, I'd want the Classic 2.

..and as much as I hate to admit it, the Teflon Cap + Resistor upgrades in the "SE" versions always have always been a worthwhile upgrade.
going from the original Classic, to ClassicSE, was quite an improvement in my opinion.

hope this maybe helps just a bit....

Thanks, that's very helpful. I've been asking in the Job 225 thread if the Classic has too much gain for that amp, still hoping for a reply.

I've yet to have any trouble running CJ Preamps with several non-CJ amplifiers..but I know the concern, considering the somewhat higher than normal output of the CJ preamps. I noticed the gain spec on the Classic 2 as 22db, it appears it has slightly less gain than the ET3/ET5/GAT, which are all rated at 25db.
Hopefully someone will have some real-world info on this.

I would not say there is too much gain, but it is high. I used my GAT very successfully with my Job 225 and it sounds glorious. Do I wish that the gain was a little lower? Absolutely, but it's not a deal breaker. The only time it was an issue for me was very late at night, I like to play music and even on number 1 on the GAT's display I felt it was still a little too loud. My remedy was to reduce the output of the source via it's variable output. This was used for music enjoyment, not critical listening.
