Chord Dave

The DSD filter and the volume control are just software features implemented on the FPGA; I doubt removing them would lower DAVE's price. And I don't think the HP output adds that much to the cost.

With DAVE you are paying a lot for the end result, the sound quality obtained by Rob Watts from his DAC know-how and not for the price of the used components, which are not very expensive. The Spartan6 LX75 used is around $100, probably even less in bulk; that LCD screen is $20-$30 etc

Good points, but there is still scope for a cheaper case and SE only output. They could use the BD76 older case, for example.
With the margins you suggest, there is a lot of room for new "marketing" based models in 6-9 months to be introduced.

250km away from the nearest dealer is ok-ish... Although that doesn't mean too much to me... I'd love to listen to it in my system! :|

Wow, that's quite an impressively detailed comparison with many of the best DACs out there. Thanks very much for sharing the link Mike!

Remarkable! -- It is not very often that a reviewer will stick his neck out to state clearly that this is the best component in its category. A more detailed comparison to other well regarded DCA such as Berkeley Reference and Emm labs Dac2X would have made the review even more useful. I was also hoping he would comment on its performance as a preamp in a top notch audio system (but he didn't).

A new review of the DAVE from HiFi+ is here:

A rave for the DAVE...

It has been getting consistently good reviews.

Now waiting to see comparisons with the Ayre QX-5 Twenty.

Who's coming to my store for the big DAC shootout? Lampi, Chord, Ayre, Berkeley and more!

January or February. I will have one or two more we will add to the mix. Each participant will choose up to 3 songs. That will form our playlist for all of us to enjoy and make our observations.
