Chord Dave: - To Pre or not to Pre

My question is simple, but the answer may not be. When using your DAVE in a two channel speaker system, does Rob Watt's volume control implementation in the DAVE perform better than the DAVE into a high quality pramp?

Thanks

Kerry

Kerry - You nailed it when you stated that the answer to your question may not be so simple. It's generally agreed upon that the purest and most transparent signal path should be the simplest which would be without adding the additional circuitry of an active preamp. The volume control implementation in the DAVE is reputed to be excellent and should not suffer from any loss of resolution like some lesser implementations do. I believe that Rob Watts (DAVE's designer) feels strongly that it is best used when connected directly to a power amp, and Chord has some new amp designs which facilitate such a direct connection. However subjectivity enters into the decision here, and there are many users who still prefer their system's sound when their DAC is connected to an active preamp. Comments are usually that it results in a fuller and more dense presentation when an active preamp is used. Some will argue that it's additional pleasing distortion that these listeners prefer and that the direct connection has to be superior. So it may come down to what you choose to believe, an objective technical rational or what your ears and heart tell you sounds better. Only you can make the best decision in your specific situation given your individual preferences and expectations. Like you said there's not always a simple definitive answer when it comes to high end audio!

I'd use the DAVE direct with a low gain amplifier like the Benchmark AHB2, Accuphase and Constellation.

I use a DAVE direct to a Constellation Centaur II and I love it. Direct and to the point (plus I have no room for a pre).

but...

At our showroom we use a DAVE with a Constellation Pre Amp or VAC pre and it is wonderful. The preamps do have a nice "sound" to them, but if you were looking for SQ gains, and are running all digital sources, the pre-amp would not be my first thing to upgrade.

For me, the biggest improvement I got from my DAVE was moving it to an amp stand or platform. In my setup I can not fit an amp stand, so I moved it and my Aurender source to a Grand Prix Formula Platform (2" Carbon Fiber dampening platform) and got a huge positive SQ difference.

After that, I added a Nordost Valhalla 2 USB cable from the Aurender to the DAVE and got another significant SQ bump.

The DAVE is amazing.

Are you using the Direct input on the Centaur? At what level do you usually keep the DAVE's volume control?

In situations like this, with a high quality built-in volume control, my preference is to go DAC direct to amp. I do it myself with a T+A DAC8 DSD directly to an amp and have excellent results.

Re: Chord Dave: - To Pre or not to Pre

I've tried it direct and via pre. If you don't want preamp flavoring (i.e. Tube) or have analog sources, than the DAVE works great direct to the amps and I must say, far better than other DAC's with built in VC I've tried. The variable analog output stage was certainly not an after thought with the DAVE.

Anaata, Depending on how new (loud) the recording is, my loud listening volume is usually about -30db or so and my quiet volume could be -50db or so.

Maybe Mike can weigh in here......how would the volume control on the Dave compare to something like a Lampizator Golden Atlantic?

Less wonky. It acts more like a Preamp VC.

Interesting. I hear many raves on Lampizator but never hear much about the VC. Both the Atlantic and Dave interest me, but I'm currently running sans a dedicated pre-amp and would like to stick with that plan.
