Chops' Current System Pics ....

I've had David Gilmour's Live at Pompeii playing since yesterday morning, and I have to say, things are sounding better. Treble is still airy, but smoother than a few days ago, midrange and mid-bass is fuller and more present, and the bass has opened up with a bit more "oomph" while still being tight and punchy. The sound stage has also opened up more with great depth and width. Quite surprising considering the X-Statik's are being powered by this little SMSL amp (no tone controls used either).

Part of this might also be due to the electronics burning in as well. I know the Cambridge streamer has been sitting for well over a year, the little integrated for more than that I think, and all of those Maze cables for a couple of years. Can't forget the old Mojo Audio 8AWG cross helix vintage Western Electric power cord that's powering the entire system through the APC.

Do you think it’s a good idea to be supporting theft of intellectual property?

I think theft of any kind is wrong. Guys like Matthew Bond (formerly) of Tara Labs pour their heart and soul into their products. Maybe if you spoke with Matthew, you would have felt different before purchasing.

Just like the knock off Nordost cables someone let us try, there is no comparison with the real thing.

Agreed. Chops, can you kindly remove the post?

For all of you showing anger and hatred towards me for using these cables...

IF you read my posts, you would have known that I did NOT purchase these cables, one of my brothers did as an experiment in one of his systems. I am only using them because I don't have any extra power cables or ICs laying around, so just borrowing them from him to put this system together.

Also, IF any of you remember, I purchased a used pair of "Tara Labs The One" speaker cables and power cable a few years back that I paid a hefty amount for, only to find out a short time later that they too were clones. After discovering those cables were fakes, I contacted the retailer who felt so bad that he failed to check on those cables himself, that he gave me a full refund and told me to keep the cables.

I pulled them out of my system and never used them again.

Lastly, you all know exactly what I have in my main system and know for a fact that I don't go for cheap knock-off junk when it comes to my system. So lecturing me and accusing me of supporting such products is rather harsh AND an insult.

With that being said, I guess I simply won't post any updates at all about the open baffle projects and whatever else I have planned for this system on this forum since people seem a bit too eager to jump the gun.

FYI, my last post about the fake branding "adding insult to injury' was not directed at you; it was meant to refer to the creators of those cables however I can see how it could be taken as negative towards you which was definitely not my intent. Consequently, I've deleted my last post altogether and hope that you will continue posting about your system.

No, you're good. I wasn't directing any of that towards you. I know what you were referring to.

Changed things up a bit...

Back to using a single NuPrime STA-9, a pair of Magnat Signature 503's, and a single HSU STF-2 subwoofer, getting its high-level signal from the amp. Oh, and of course, my 3rd Pangea Vulcan rack that I bought years back. Everything else remains the same.

Please... No "HATE" comments. This is all just for fun, and it's just a second system to play around with.

Drove 150 miles round trip yesterday to pick up something I've always wanted...

Finally found a near mint pair at a extremely good price. Bose 901 Series V with Series VI EQ and tulip stands.

I've heard the 901's several times before, a few times in Circuit City, and once or twice at the PX at MacDill Airforce Base. I have to say, they sound much better in my room. A lot more natural than in the showrooms. In the showrooms, they probably had the EQ jacked all the way up as well as the tone controls on the gear used with them.

I have all of the controls on the EQ set to "flat", and I really see no need to adjust them as the 901's sound pretty darn good in this room, the master bedroom. This room is roughly 13' x 16' x 8', and I'm powering them with one of my NuPrime STA-9 amps which puts out 120 watts @ 8 ohms... More than enough power for this room and these speakers. I have the 901's center part of the rear "V" about 31" out from the front wall. This distance also helps in the fact that I'm getting a much more balanced overall response out of them than what I remember in the showrooms.

The bass is quite punchy, detailed and extends a lot deeper than I expected, easily down to the low 30's, possibly a little lower from listening to a few of my very familiar pipe organ recordings. Midrange seems to sound good, though not quite as full as my Maggies in my main rig. And the treble seems fine to me as well. Obviously, not super airy, but open and extended enough for a pleasant, smooth sound that's non-fatiguing. They're definitely not lacking in either extremes like all of those clowns claim (no highs, no lows, must be blah, blah, blah). I really have no complaints with them honestly. However I do wish those tulip stands were a bit taller.

I have always been attracted to the 901's unique looks and design, and even more so, their use of multiple 4.5" drivers producing that kind of sound. I mean, I wasn't even playing them loud last night, and not only were both windows in this room rattling, but so were the sliding closet doors and the main door!

The above was when I was playing Boz Scaggs' Thanks to You. Boz's voice came through loud and clear, and all of those deep bass notes came through effortlessly and with authority.

This system is by no means a replacement for my mine rig, but it's just about as enjoyable to listen to. I'm glad I finally got my hands on a pair of these little suckers!

Have fun with your new speakers.... try elevating them another 12 to 18 inches with some custom stands...( you mentioned that you wished your stands were taller so you are already thinking about this... I owned a set Way back in the day.....eventually sold them and got a pair of Rectilinear 111's...then a pair of ESL 57's.....and.....and....🙂

I took a pair of 901's with me to my college dorm in 1974, along with a McIntosh C28 and MC2105 amp (I worked at a HiFi dealer). Hung them on chains from above. Quite the punch back in the day ... Enjoy!

it took some work, but once I hung the 901vI from the ceiling 2' in from the back & side walls the bass was as impressive as most speakers I've had that cost much more.

Per Bose recommendations of having the 901s between 8 to 18" from the front wall, the bass was rather bloated and smeared. Once I moved them out further and further, ending up at 31", the bass is actually quite clear and detailed. Quite surprised honestly.

The rest of the spectrum isn't too shabby either. Yeah, they could use a little bit more fullness in the minds, but not much, but I think I'm just used to the Maggie sound as far as mids go. And the treble could use just a touch more air on the very top end, but it's quite satisfying the way it is.

I'll be looking into recapping the EQ, hopefully with some quality film caps in the signal path, and update the electrolytics in the power supply section.

I'll also upgrade the binding posts on them and add binding posts on the tulip stands so I can use some good speaker cables.

I also believe that these are the end of production run of the V series as the surrounds seem to be original with visible cream colored adhesive around the edges of the surrounds, leading me to believe these are the factory upgraded surrounds that tend not to deteriorate. They're still soft and supple after all these years.

I'll have to see if I can find out by searching the serial numbers.

My dad built a beautiful pair of Klipschorn corner speakers in the 60s, he was a well known woodworker in spare time and particularly during his retirement. My musical tastes developed from that McIntosh/ Klipschorn system.

Due to lessened interest, and WAF, he swapped those out for 901s, hidden up in the corners of the room, pretty much against the walls, and sidewalls. I did not listen there again.

Enjoy Randy! There are all sorts of recapping, re-foaming, and modding stories out there for the 901 speaker system.
