Hey all, just joined here after ending up here via Google multiple times over the year. My main gear is all made in the US, McIntosh, VPI TT, W4S DAC and Kimber Kables with a few Blue Jeans in the mix. The VPI is my main source probably followed by XM/FM and CDs equally after that. I've been anti digital files as I only have a couple dozen albums on an ancient 10 year old mp3 player but I might make the move to a music server.

Oh and I enjoy a good glass of bourbon!

There are areas that you would want to avoid that are big gang areas (been that way for decades), but otherwise it's like any other big city for the most part. There are absolutely a lot of shootings here, but the vast majority are gang/drug related, unfortunately innocent bystanders are sometimes in the wrong place at the wrong time. That said--the areas that are tourist destinations are heavily policed and very safe. The company I work for is based in your neck of the woods in Los Altos...it's not as safe here as there :)
 
Having grown own up in Philly and now in Chicago for 23 years, I can safely say that Chicago is without a doubt the best city in the USA. Everything world class NY has but welcoming, friendly people, more manageable, affordable and in particular cleaner and to you East Coasters’ surprise, the beach (yes, a real beach even though it’s a lake, albeit a Great one), is smack in the middle of the City. No schlepping to the Hamptons or the NJ shore in ungodly traffic. Come visit when the Chicago River is dyed green on St. Paddy’s Day, have an Italian Beef sandwich and a Chicago hot dog with the works (including celery salt and sport peppers) to wash down the beer and you won’t want to leave!

Welcome aboard, had a great Ribeye @ Gibson's this past October. One of my favorite steakhouses !

I did a job in Philly for about 3-4 months when I wasn't too far out of college...I was not a fan. I had some friends in NYC so if I chose to not fly home for the weekend I'd take the train up to Manhattan and hang out with them. I really like NYC, I don't necessarily find them to be much less friendly than us in the Midwest. I visit Boston once or twice a year, I always tell people Chicago is like a smaller, cleaner New York and Boston is like a smaller, cleaner Chicago. One thing I do like about here is that you can pretty much go in anywhere in jeans and fit in. When I'm in New York I don't get the same feeling. And yep, we're a great food city too!

I no longer eat red meat, but check out Benny's Chophouse next time you're here. Their lunch menu is a pretty good value for the burgers, though they've jacked the lunch steak prices up to normal dinner prices. Saturday lunches at their bar are a great time.
