CD is the perfect format...according to Steve

The CD format is obviously not “perfect” but it’s not dead either. While many write off Compact Discs as an anachronistic poor sound quality physical format that is merely days – if not hours – away from vanishing forever from the musical media landscape, I believe that it is probably too soon to write the epitaph for the Compact Disc. Wikipedia reckons more than 200 billion discs have been sold globally and there obviously not all be used for coffee coasters.

According to RIAA stats for year ending 2017, digital downloads fell to $1.3 billion revenue, whereas physical media (CD, LP) while also falling, was $1.5 billion. The elephant in the room is steaming which courtesy of subscriptions now accounts for nearly 2/3rds of all revenue.

Many out there, myself included, still don’t think we stilling getting the best we can from the format and locally I have friends who still prefer the old CD over streaming and digital downloads.

All good points. imho the problem was never with the format itself but rather the playback equipment. New and modern electronics have given life to the cd.

I still will purchase a CD if I cannot find a high resolution download version of an album I want. I immediately rip the disk and that is probably the only time the CD will be in a spinner. The same with SACDs, which I really like, but the ripped version almost always sounds better (no physical spinning and upsampled to 512 <shurg>). I never stream... simply do not like it... I prefer to have the album on my server, that simple.

I never get sound from any videos posted on AS.

Correct, can’t view within the site. Exit to YouTube.

Sometimes I have the same problem. When that happens I toggle the vibrate/volume switch on my iPhone and it fixes the problem.

There is nothing wrong with CDs as a medium. As the fellow in the video points out, they just work.

After ripping all my CDs to my server and now that I subscribe to music services (Tidal, Spotify, Amazon) I see no need to purchase physical CDs anymore.

That because I can stream and play music (Tidal, Roon, HQP) that sounds better than the same music played from a physical CD via a CD player.

I knew a guy who got divorced. Threw away over 2000 CD. I heard about it the day after. I was pissed. I was in the middle of ripping over 1200 CD myself with DB Poweramp and a Nimbie robot.
I find it interesting that a 24/192 download is $19, while a DVD no jewel case is $9. I am going to buy one and see if my DB Poweramp will rip native flac 24/192. Never tried. Maybe my point is if downloads were $9, I would not bother with the physical medium. However, I have all my CD. Good backups. I do have a spare drive at friends houses and I keep one drive in the NAS and the other on a shelf.

I still buy CD's, ( and LP's) why not own your music instead renting it :D, rip away

Chris.......Same here. I ordered three CD's this morning from Amazon. I enjoy all of my source components. That includes my CD player in the living room system and my CD/SACD player in the studio system. Even though I rip all of my CD's to the Aurender N10 and N100H music servers I still enjoy spinning CD's from time to time. I just spun Fiona Joy Hawkins in the Simaudio MOON 260D transport this morning while I enjoyed my coffee and pastry.

One thing about CD's, the wife can operate the player and the components to make sound

I’ve been buying up CD’s like crazy. Ever since Rick and I compared the CD vs Tidal, I wanted to stock up. Plus you can get some amazing deals on used mint SACD’s on eBay.

Really? Are you connecting the analog outputs of your CD player straight into your preamp or are you going from the digital output from the CD player into the same DAC you are using for streaming music?

... see if my DB Poweramp will rip native flac 24/192...

I tried a program dvdaudioextractor.exe that will rip DVD audio. I was going to buy it, but going through my collection I only had 4 DVD Audio discs. It can lets you choose which version to rip... I had two that had both 24/48 and 24/96 versions. I was able to get the 96, not problem.

The only issue I saw was that it did not seem to be able to pull the track names so I have to rename them. Maybe the paid version can???

So am I... my Windows laptop. When I click the link it opens another tab and then runs the video which sound just fine. I don't have to do anything but click the link and all works perfect.

The once in a while that I decide to spin a disk.... for a Redbook CD I use the Coax connection from the Oppo to the DAC. For SACDs I go through an XLR cable to the pre-amp. But that is rare any more.

When I click the link it takes me straight to youtube and the video plays, but no audio.
