I saw “Captain Phillips” today at the local Imax Theatre. This is a movie based on a true story that occurred in 2009.
First, the picture and direction were superb, and not quite needing Imax, although I enjoyed it. The Imax “sound” however was great. The story takes place on the ocean and the sound comes from all directions, adding to the vastness of the ocean and the confusion of the participants.
Although this is, in many ways, a “small” movie as large as it is. That is, this is a character study of Captain Phillips, played by Tom Hanks, who is certainly going to be nominated for another Oscar. Captain Phillips is commanding a ship carrying supplies, including food and water, to staring children in Africa. Barkhad Abdi, in his first movie role, plays one of several Somali Pirates who try to first hijack the ship and then later, “kidnap” the captain and hold him hostage for ransom.
The movie in some sways is “claustrophobic.” After the director, Paul Greengrass introduces us to the crew and a large ship on the ocean, the film becomes more and more intimate. Then when the four pirates and Tom Hanks end up in a small sealed lifeboat you feel the heat and want tom open a window.
Four stars, a great movie, a great cast and a great story.
