Capacitance question

Hi - I just bought a Lyra Etna and before I set this up I want to figure out what the loading should be. I have a Synergistic Research Excite phono cable and I'm no sure what the capacitance is ( nothing i could find on the website). I also need the capacitance of the internal wiring of the VPI FatBoy. If you can help please let me know!!:hey:

It’s an MC Cart so unlike a MM cart, the capacitance doesn’t really matter much. Hopefully your phono pre has adjustable resistive loading so you can dial in your new and awesome cart! Congrats and enjoy.

Hi Tom, thanks for responding. I thought it was the other way around? I thought capacitance value didn't matter for MM carts but does for MC. In the instructions for the Etna J. Carr provides a table to come up with the proper loading. For this apparently the capacitance is needed but I don't have it. BTW I see you have Ohm F speakers - I had a pair of those in the 1980's - awesome speakers...!

Thanks Brian - we are enjoying the F’s at our lake home. Fun speakers.

MM carts are very capacitance sensitive - because their resistance and inductance is very high they interact with the arm and cable capacitance.

MC carts have very low resistance and inductance so the cable and arm capacitance is much less of a factor.

If you need to guess, a value of 20 pF / ft is ‘in the ballpark’ but cables vary so much in their construction it could be anywhere from 10 pF/ft to 100 pF/ft.
