I know you were shopping for a new DAC, Joe, but what are you using as your source and storage? (I see the EMM DAC; shocked you'd be looking to replace that...)

LMAO. I've never been a fan of their ridiculously over priced gear. But there are some (ah hum), who are all about bling and showy.

Two ends of hi end audio IMO: Classe - ridiculously good high end gear for competitive prices. Burmester - decent gear, but insanely expensive.

Funny Mike, I would have said Bryston as the competitive spirit and added Goldmund as synonymous with Burmester.

I do like the Burmester amps, though. But they are very, very pricey.

Hi E,

Not replace but augment. I do like variety. I have the TSDX transport and I am using external drives on the Mac Mini which will be eventually replaced with either a CAPS or similar.

Ahh... Well if you want something that is actually stable and well-built, just ask Dewey how pleased he is with my work. :)

Oh, I know. Dewey is sooooooooo happy right now. I love to see him like that. I may have to draft you for a similar build. There are a few more pieces of gear coming but when the dust settles, we will have to talk ;)

Definitely Bryston too. Both are good old Canadian companies!! Dewey's 28's are world class amps. They are up there with the best of the best in SS IMO.

As for music severs, people tend to over complicate things and spend way way way too much to. Something like you put together for Dewey or my CAPS 3.0 is golden.

We are talking about transmitting the data as a digital signal (1's and 0's) to the DAC. Yes jitter and all that jazz is important and some have found stark improvements with the Berkley USB, but the DAC is key IMO for ultimately affecting sound. The music server matters, but not at the same level as the DAC. Once you build a music server which is fanless, uses SSD's and a dedicated top of the line sound card (or not - depending on your preference), its a home run and tough to beat for the $$$.

Mike, here in Europe, things are a bit different.
When I was looking for a new amp, I compared different brands.
I heard the McIntosh MA7000, Burmester 082, Accuphase integrated.
These were all in the same price range, with the Burmester even being cheaper than the Mac!
I know the Burmester is double the price of the MA7000 in the US.
The three amps sounded different but they were all three excellent, and all three companies have a long term vision: their products will not look outdated very rapidly.
I simply picked the Burmester, because of the WAF (Mac and Accuphase didn't have that for my significant other), and because of its impeccable reputation.
