Yes, they need it. I am not debating that nor want a debate. But for those who agree that they do I have a question: regarding amplifier break-in:

Does the volume level matter? is low level just as good as high level?

Do we just want to have a signal travel from front to back or do we really need to pump maximum current through the little bits inside the amp?

Sigh . . . .

It really depends on which amp you are talking about. This elfin hobby has soooooooo many variations.

For example - and I know you said amps - but on an Ayre preamp, there are 2-3-4 different ranges of volume levels that each need to be broken in. Oh, also each and every input. Lets face it - to fully break an Ayre preamp in -- well a human really doesn't have the life span. Kidding of course but . . . . . .

thanks guys,

I bought a DSD test album from HD tracks with a burn-in track. They claim it burns in equipment 4 times faster, but I just played it a couple of times and prefer to hear the sonic progression with regular music instead; I am in no real hurry...
I believe that, that's the right way to do it as well. Just play what ever you feel like instead of thinking too much about it. I'm a strong believer in breaking things in as well, but what's the point of buying equipment if you don't use it :)

I also like listening to new equipment while breaking it in. I am currently running in new speakers and I hear them opening up and stabilizing more each day. Very cool process actually!

The main thing is that the amps aren't simply on or left on standby, but actually processing a signal be it music or a burn in track. I checked the instructions for my PAD Luminist System Enhancer cd & it sais - "Set the playback sound level to a moderate volume: one at which the tones generated by the Enhancer would not interfere with a normal conversation in the listening room". Though note: burn in cd's are specially designed to give the connected equipment a 'work out'. Hence with regular music, I would play it at varied volume levels just as you would do normally.
