BorderPatrol DAC SE

A friend fell in love with it after hearing it and wanted it for his CD player. So I sold it to him. I was about to order another but then Jock told me about his BorderPatrol SE. I bought that instead and love it even though it’s only 24/96 and no dsd.

Got my DAC today. The literature it came with recommends a music signal be played continuously for a week for burn-in. In so doing, should the tube be left on or just the master on/off switch (the DAC is operable with or without the tube)? Thanks.

I left my tube on when listening, but while away, or just running in, tube off. Love this dac.

I have been using the BP SE DAC for the best part of a year having compared it to the Schiit Yggdrasil and the Lampisator L4. Each DAC had its strengths but the BP just made listening to music addictive, and the quality of streaming from Qobuz got a welcome jump from using my Bel Canto 3.5vb.

Joe, I deliberately got mine without the USB input. I think that as a technology it is moving very fast. I have used the SingXer F1 and Matrix SPDIF2 extensively. My recommendation would still be the F1, which gets a nice bump in sound quality when using a good power source, my recommendation being an RCore LPSU (Zero Zone or DC30W via the bay) via an LT3045.

I think this DAC is shockingly good, and Gary is a nice guy to deal with.

Hi Joe, It only seemed polite as you popped up on the Naim forum, and I don't feel it is polite to shout Border Patrol DAC too loudly there. M

Burning my BP DAC SE in now and can’t wait to listen. I’m running Tidal straight through my Apple MacBook Pro. Sounds crystal clear and dynamite. I asked Gary about using a USB “decrapifier“ and he said his customers are getting better results without one.

For the convenience could I run digital out from my Lumin into the BP DAC to take advantage of the Lumin’s hard-wired network connection? Any benefit to doing so?

:)

Naim seems to favor their system integration over adding other manufacturers components.

That's a great idea. You'll have access to your entire library and can up/down-sample everything to 24/96 to match the input on the BP SE dac.

Hello all
Got to meet Joeinid the other day. Purchased his Border Patrol DAC from him.

Has anyone attempted to to try other brands of EZ80 rectifier tubes?
Curious to hear what changes were heard.

Actually no. I found a deal on a Bricasti M1SE. I need to add the network interface and I heard that MQA is coming for it soon so I'll wait until it's ready and get them both done. I only sold the BP dac because I wanted the USB interface, but then I heard Gary Dewes is coming out with a more upscale version so I know someone getting one and can't wait for his opinion of it. I'll most likely order Gary's better dac at some point. I absolutely love the Bricasti too but there is something like 14 filters on it that choosing the right one takes a little effort and that's why I think so many sell them too soon.

I may not be DACless but some say Classless :)

Going back and forth between the Border Patrol and the Schitt Yaggy. Each have has it's own strenghts. Which to keep and which to sell.
Poor me. Decisions, decisions.

This should be our problems

Emil, could you please comment a bit more on each DAC's strengths? I love my Yggy, and was impressed by the BorderPatrol DAC at AXONA 2017. I have an idea which way things may go in a comparison, but I have never made the direct comparison myself.

Feel free to be as honest as you like, I won't ditch my Yggy anytime soon and I am aware that conclusions will depend on specific system/room configurations as well as personal listening priorities. I am just curious.

Thanks
Al
