Best of Munich Hifi Show 2017

A big thank you to Mike and all those who posted show comments and pictures. Are most rooms at Munich larger than rooms at US venues? A lot of the rooms seemed large in the pictures. Is that normal for the show or did the larger systems/rooms just attract more fans?

Yes, much larger than our hotel rooms. We have generally some big rooms that are more conference rooms, but pretty much all their rooms were a good size. I would GUESS 18 x 25, some much bigger.

I went to the Magico room to hear the new S3 mk 2, but I think I will never develop a liking for a Magico / Spectral combo. I like more body and texture to the sound and I know that Magicos can sound like this - only not with Spectral.
+ 1. Spectral with Magico is not a good choice for synergy imho. I know shows are all about cross-pollination, but If I had absolute carte blanche to match any gear with the S3 Mk2's, I would have gone for the following setup...

- Vitus SS-103
- Vitus SL-103
- Vitus SCD-025 Mk2
- Alluxity Media One server
- Kronos Sparta w/- Graham Phantom Supreme arm + Miyajima Madake cart
- Vitus SP-103 phono stage.
- Critical Mass Systems QXK racks with upgraded Black Diamond shelves
- Stillpoints Ultra feet
- Gigawatt PC-3 SE Evo conditioner
- Jorma Prime/Statement cables
- Acoustic Revive RCI-3H cable risers
- Telos GNR + Entreq grounding cables
- RW Acoustics room treatments

Tweaks would be - a negative ioniser & completely modified Chartres MK3 Schumann Resonator

The above is based on my view that potential buyers want to see gear setup with accompanying equipment they can actually afford and might buy, rather than silly priced reference gear that has little relevance. And I would be prepared to bet my above setup would have had lines going out the door the whole show.

Yes Martin...agreed! Did you hear that Beethoven piano piece Louis played? The Kronos Pro and new Kronos phonostage paired nicely with this gear.

Yes he played that for me and before that we played the whole 4th movement off my Scheherazade LP. Amazing.

There are quite a few amps that have great synergy with Magicos: Vitus, msb, Dagostino, Absolare, VAC just to name a few. Unfortunately, none of those brands is carried by the german Magico distributor.

$16k speaker cables are affordable?

Pass X350.8 and thank me later. If your budget is higher, than you have lots of options.

Sure, if you get 10 guys in a room...you'll probably get 10 different opinions. That's just my pick ;).

Relative to the speakers and exotica on show at Munich, sure. Or to put it another way, I could have said Vitus SM-103 mono's, MP-L201, MP-P201 etc & the gear really would have been unaffordable..

And no comments Mike? Which speakers did they use? Gauder?

Yes, Gauder RC8's. I think others should comment. It's not my cup of tea.

I listened to the Gauder RC8´s and the AVM twice on both days I attended the HighEnd. The Gauders with Audionet I did not listen.

For me the setup of the Gauder RC8´s and AVM was the biggest disappointment of the show. AVM and Gauder did not match at all in my opinion. The sound in my ears was capped and lifeless, far of naturalness and harmonic music. Because I know what the RC8 is able and how these speaker could sound, the disappointment was so high. I don´t know why Roland Gauder paires his loudspeakers so many times with the AVM electronic, especially while the distributor of Gauder is offering Vitus too.

As soon as I returned home, I checked my RC 8 with the Vitus at home and felt comfortable again:audiophile:. Another world. And I am not alone with my opinion. In the evening Lukasz Fikus from Lampizator visited me at my home and delivered one Superkomputer and an GG balanced DAC for test purposes. We connected only the Superkomputer with the Vitus components (including the SCD-025 DAC) and his opinion: This setup would have had a chance for the "best show award" in Munich. I don´t know whether he was joking (hopefully not), but he seemed to be very serious. And this without his own DAC connected! Following we listened nearly two more hours to different music and hat a interesting conversation until he has to leave to drive home. A great meeting for me with an interesting personality. :)

Disagree. I have heard Spectral with Magico S7 and Q1 speakers. Great body and tone in both cases, paired with enormous resolution of texture.

Note: I have no skin in the game, owning neither Spectral nor Magico.

That's the wonderful thing about democracy and the disclaimer "imho".

Guys, forgive my intrusion but I think you shouldn't forget that cables and source can make it or brake it... So Spectral and Magico might sound good or bad depending on the other unknowns in the equation (room and position included)! :D

Yup, it's all depending on context, and you hit the important parameters. I'd add power from the wall -- the power situation at those shows is not always optimal. And amps that starve tend to sound thin.

I can fully confirm your impression. I wrote already 2 years ago and also last year that Gauder and AVM are not a good combination. Imho, the Gauder speakers are like all top speakers very transparent to sources and amplifers (even if they do not represent a particularly difficult load for the amp).

I think they work best with a Class A amp without negative feedback or even tube amps. AVM and also Audionet are the complete opposite.

I talked with Gauder about that point several times and also he knows the issue, but the people around AVM and Gauder have a long lasting personal relationship and so they share the same rooms at the Munich show.

Gauder knows that other amps match much better with his speakers. Unfortunately I cannot post here what he told me (if you like to know more send me a pm).

I'm sure you have one of the best speakers out there and the same holds true for your amp! You have a real winner system.

The Gauder was my biggest disappointment too. I read great things about the pairing with Vitus and so was excited to hear them, but must have visited the Gauder room 3-4 times and was lifeless and dull every time. The Audionet room was better, but wasn't mind blowing.
I know personal connections matter, but if it leaves a lot of people with the same poor impression, it can't make good business sense.

I have to agree on Spectral , they have good jump and realism, very Worthy ...

My 0.02 on the Magico room:

The music selection also let the room down a bit.
A few visits to the room left me unable to make an opinion.
