good afternoon gentlemen!

i have been lurking around here for weeks. many people who seem very knowledgeable suggest tube amps. i have been convinced to order a tube integrated amp from Triode. it seems to have these inputs. input impedance unbalanced 100K ohm.input terminals phono MM 1 line 4 pre in 1. OK, i have read many people say that vinyl records give a great sound. can you suggest a reasonably priced set up? please suggest specific models and brands. i THINK i need a turntable, a cartridge, but do not know if i need a "phono preamp" whatever that is. does the turntable output go direct into the input i mentioned, or do i need another piece in there. please explain. only thing i can figure is the cartridge does not make lots of volts, and may need to be increased before the integrated amp?????? i did not receive this amp yet.

i want a very nice sound, but do not wish to spend many thousands of dollars on the best turntable in the world. the room is 13 by 13 feet, 10 foot ceiling. the amp says class A, 50 watts per channel. i have bowers and wilkins speakers CM 6 S2, they make lots of sound for that small room.
when i look up how to set up a turntable, i find it quite daunting.

I WELCOME ANY ADVICE AND COMMENTS!! i am getting OK results with an inexpensive CD player, which i will upgrade, and an OLD SAE preamp and power amp! ha! i will get a great cd player, as i have tons of CD's. i listen to a range of music, classical full orchestra, some old Eric Clapton, beatles, etc.

can i manage to do the "setup" or do i need some pro to set it up?

thanks so much for your time! you guys have been a GREAT help!
best regards,
Bob

Bob,

You don't need a phonostage unless you go with a moving coil (MC) cartridge.

I would recommend a VPI Classic 1 (VPI is running a special right now on Classic 1's) or a VPI Scout turntable with the stock arm and a Ortofon 2M Red.

Frankly, the Scout with a Ortofon 2M Red is great.

Mike

The Scout is a good idea, but as a former short term owner of the Ortofon, I would step up the line from the Red a few steps.

2M black is killer good, but I was thinking about budget $$.

Somewhere in the middle is good, but to my ears the Red is grainy and can have IGD problems. If it will work with the arm due to it's lighter weight I think the voicing of the OM series is better.

Denon DL 110, MC sound while still on a standard phono stage , great tracker and low surface noise , good entry Budget cartridge , unfortunately setup is everything and the ritual is a must ...

A VPI table with VPI mounting and aligning the cart. Ship. Receive. Open box. Connect. Enjoy. Trip to Goodwill and local record shops. Spin, rinse, repeat. [emoji41]

I like Rega too, but after hanging with the great VPI guys and building tables, I'm biased. I think VPI owns the sub-$10k market and over $10k, the Avenger DD is drool worthy.

The table that blew me away for the $$ was the new Prime Reference.

But I digress.

VPI Scout with a Ortofon 2M Blue?

My favorite in that "beginner" price range has always been the Audio Technica 120 E/T. I like it more than the higher priced 440 which needs to be loaded down to sound correct to me though a lot of people like it. For the last several years I have been using mostly the Denon DL-301 Mk II and various vintage Grado Signature bodies with MCZ styli. I do think even at the new price it may be better than the lower end Ortofons.

Take a look at the Clearaudio Concept table.....fit and finish is nice, easy to set up and sounds good.

He has a MM phonostage. Moving Coil (MC) would require another purchase.

thanks guys! from this, i deduce that moving coil must mean instead of "moving magnet" i further think that MC must make less volts. i am going to call VPI tomorrow and ask lots of dumb questions! ha!!

happy FOURTH!

I have been researching a little into maybe stepping back into a turntable. I would be looking at a real budget range. Pro-Ject seem to get very good ratings. Good models seem to start in the $399 range. Another better choice looks to be about $599, and a nice step up about $999.

Above that, unless you are going to go crazy... my best choice would be the Marantz. From research it appears to be a special deal. Made by Clearaudio, with their $1000 tonearm and $775 cartridge.... all for $1499. and it looks gorgeous also!

thanks randy!!

looks like a GREAT value, amazon seems to have it!

best

Yea, I was eyeing it before getting the new Marantz spinner. That might be my next "upgrade" :)...

Amazon has it, I think Music Direct and Crutchfield also stock it...
