Suspected some issues with my current preamp and purchased Victors latest solid state preamp creation the VK-85. I have experience with his older tube preamps but I am over tubes in my main system. The VK-85 has met and exceeded any and all expectations. You email BAT and you’re likely to correspond with Victor himself. Nice guy!

I'd like to hear some BAT. I've heard they have been at Axpona but I somehow miss them. I'd think with them being owned or somehow affiliated with Music Direct they'd be better represented at Axpona.

I did not know they were owned by Music Direct. That is interesting. I do know Victor Khomenko the founder is still active with the company.
The VK-85 has surpassed my previous preamp in sound quality.

Is the previous "preamp" the ARC Ref 5SE?

Mark, no it was another solid state preamp. I had a love hate relationship with the Ref 5SE, unfortunately it moved to a new loving owner.

What was the "hate" part about?

Mark I think "hate" maybe a too strong of a word, lets change it to "frustration". Now to put in context when I had the REF 5SE my room and system were not even close to the level it is today.
The REF5 would sound glorious for three listening sessions and then for some reason, to me, it was unlistenable. Maybe my ADHD tendency to try every 6H30 tube produced had something to do with it.
Anybody who has a REF5 SE who needs an amazing NOS Western Electric 6550 tube for the PS let me know. 🥳🤩😍

I only used 6H30 tubes from ARC and never had any issues with the Ref 5SE. I only sold it to you because I wanted the Ref 6 which I still have. The Ref 6 and Ref 6SE also use the 6550 in the power supply.

Mark I am now older and wiser, much wiser...........Want the WE 6550 tube for the REF6 SE?

Tubes sonically deteriorate long before they measure bad , it’s one reason to keep SS around if using tubes to keep them honest ….

I really enjoyed the REF5 SE about 90% of the time. The BAT VK-85 has a tube flair to it even though being full solid state. I think Victor has worked with tubes for so many years everything comes out “tubey”.

So here's the problem with using expensive, rare, NOS 6550A tubes in the power supply of certain ARC Ref line stages and phono preamps. The 6550 output tube used in the Ref line stages and phono preamps are run hard and hot. ARC recommends replacing them at 2,000 hours. I had one 6550 blow well before 2,000 hours which necessitated a return of my Ref 6 to ARC for repair.

When I was talking to a tech at ARC about the repair,he recommended replacing the 6550 at 1,000 hours to prevent future problems. I took his advice seriously and I change out the 6550s in both my Ref 3 phono preamp and my Ref 6 every 1,000 hours.

I'm sure someone will make the argument that old production 6550 tubes were built much better than current production Sovtek NOS 6550 tubes and their tube life is much greater. In your case, did you buy your WE 6550 as NOS or was it sold as "tests like new"? How many hours have you put on the tube since you bought it when you were using it in your Ref 5SE?

The bottom line for me is that it doesn't make sense to seek out old, expensive NOS 6550 tubes to use in the power supply of the ARC Ref gear that uses them. Now if someone comes along and says they have been using expensive NOS 6550 tubes in their ARC Ref phono preamps and lines stages and they are getting 5,000 hours out of them before they change them out, I might be interested.

I have several NOS RCA 6550 tubes in my stash of tubes, but I can't bring myself to run them hot and hard in my ARC gear just to pull them at 1,000 hours.

It sure made my REF5 SE sound purdy when I had it. You also made my point why my main system is now all solid state.
