In some ways, my first stereo, a Sansui receiver, a Gerard 55 turntable and Advent speakers, like my first car, still holds a special place in my heart. When I saw how great Goldfinger looked on a Laser Disc Player I bought one. I soon placed my 17 inch Sony in between the Advents, taking my second step towards home theatre. When I moved into my own house in 1991 I made sure I’d have a great room for my music But by 1995 home theatre was creeping in. I had a pair of Thiel 7.2 speakers with a Levenson stereo amp so I placed a smaller Thiel in between the 7.2s and installed two in wall Power planes for the surround. These were run by a three channel Proceed HPA amp. A decade later everything had changed. TV’s were high definition, with 5.1 audio. SACDs were introduced along with Blu Ray discs and my Thiels were dated. I got the Revel Salon II and a matching center channel, the Voice II. So that I would not distort the sound of these great new speakers I went to a projection system with a 110 inch screen on the wall. It was originally a Marantz and now a JVC 66U. Another major decision was to get matching mono amps for these wonderful speakers.

I bought two Krell 720 amps (later replaced by the 600s) and the Krell 450 (now the 400e) for the center. I cannot believe how great they sounded. But they took up too much space and heated up the room. My garage is just behind my stereo cabinet so I had a shelf built in. The amps are only 24 inches away from the pre-amp but you cannot see the amps in the music room. I still had the three channel Proceed so I added a rear channel to the back, between the two surrounds and have now a 6.2 system.

I replaced my huge four piece CD player set, which was 18 years old, with a one piece Krell SACD Cypher. I still have and use my VPI 19, Day Sequerra Tuner and my rarely used Pioneer Elite LDS-2 Laser Disc player. The SVS SB-13 Sub-Woofers were a unique purchase for me. For the first time I bought a major audio component without hearing it first.. It got great recommendations from people I trusted and SVS gave great phone support. Frankly, it replaced one of my errors: The single Thiel Subwoofer. I use the subs for movies only and, for the first time using the SVS, I got a clear, deep, directional bass that did not interfere with the center channel. I am impressed.

Then I got the piece de resistance: The Krell 707 3D. Wow, this is terrific. To my surprise, it was not only a great multi-channel player and DAC but better 2 channel pre-amp than my two piece Levenson 32. I did have to get a phono preamp, and got the Krell KPE. I am no longer a two channel guy with a multi-channel add on. The system now is totally integrated. You know, I really don’t consider myself an audiophile, the equipment is transient is the music and movies that I love. And now I have both….in the same room.

There is one more thing I should mention. I have gotten some criticism for “hiding” my amps and putting components in a cabinet and not on racks. I have no need to “show off” my equipment at all. I like a quiet, non-distracting (no blinking lights) atmosphere where the music and movies take over the room.

Barry. Excellent set up ! I bet you don't need to go movie theater any more for sure. Thanks for share.

Thanx Paul. I do have people come in with cell phones and a pair of older people repeating the dialogue just so it seems like a real theatre .

Not a cheap piece of electronic at all; actually it is I believe the most hush-hush SSP around.
I think you're the only person I know so far to own this marvelous sounding and devastatingly big 56 lbs digital surround sound processor and magnificent analog preamp.
