I am enthralled with the quality of the previous generation of input and driver tubes, which featured only one triode per bottle. The twin triodes per bottle were a huge cost saving, but a move backwards in terms of the reproduction of music.
For example: one 6J5-GT / 6J5-G / L 63 equals one half a 6SN7. One 6SF5-GT equals one half of a 6SL7
on steroids. Rolling has never been easier, you can buy ready made 2 to 1 adapters on eBay for each of the substitutes described above.
British tubes need to be heavily broken-in, they sound best with about 3 hours of life left in them.
One quad of 6J5's bested a pair of the Holy Grail of the 6SN7 World, the Marconi / GEC 6SN7 GT, metal bases and a glass bottle, which traded at $4,000 a pair on eBay.
Search your non-audio or misc stock for a Raytheon CK-5694, ST shaped, careful non-standard octal pin-out. They have too little gain for input tubes, but sound great as drivers.
Nice to meet you from freezing, Colorado!
