Axpona 2015 - Best...and not so best of....

Bob Graham signed a dealer in Chicago for TechDAS the week before Axpona. Too late to display one of the turntables.

If it was the AP reissue of Witches Brew, the strings are hard no matter what was going on in the bass.

I also agreed with the Maggie 3.7i comment though all sense of space was missing on the Yarlung recordings that I know pretty well.

Honorable Mention? Paragon: Doshi/Wilson
I am *supremely* impressed with the Wilson Sabrina speakers. The driver integration is probably the best I've ever heard from any "box" speaker. And Nick's gear is just special. To be honest, as I am typing this I am considering that this is probably really a tie with the Audio Note room. Hmmm ... :skeptical:

I thought the Doshi/Paragon room was the most pleasing sounding at the show, and I am not normally a fan of Wilson speakers. Nick's electronics sound wonderful.

Wished I spent more time?

Acoustic Zen/triode:
Usually a favorite of mine. I was disappointed on Friday afternoon - something was not right. I popped my head in on Saturday and it was better, but crowded. Unfortunatley I didn't return.

I went in that room on Friday and the sound was WAY too hot for my taste. The high frequencies were ear splitting. Glad they fixed it.

Looks like some fine TT's showed up....

Absolutely, there were some fantastic tables in attendance. There were other tables there as well, such as the Clearaudio Innovation Wood. While it sounded nice overall, I felt that it's speed stability wasn't quite up to the performance standards as the previously mentioned tables. Unfortunately, I'm quite sensitive to this. As it turned out, they were not using the optional power supply for this table...maybe if they were, I might not have noticed that it was lacking in this regard.

I saw Transrotor and Sota there, but every time I came to their room, they were never playing analog. I missed Spiral Groove, Triangle Art, Dr Feickert and SME. Not sure if they were in attendance or not, but I would have like to been able to check them out further, especially Alan Perkins Spiral Groove. I have fond memories of his RPM tables from years ago.

On the less expensive end of things, the Townsend Rock was there as well as the Well Tempered Amadeus. The later sounded quite nimbal, but on the light side. Didn't have the weight of the music from what I was hearing from the recordings they were playing.

I enjoyed the show overall and thought it was better than in past years. I wish that it was held downtown though.....my wife could shop Michigan Ave/Oak St during the day, there are a lot of fantastic Restaurants, Jazz/Blues clubs all within walking distance to give you more to do at night.

Best wishes,
No Regrets

I thought Nick Doshi had a great sounding room as well. I really like that Brinkman Balance TT! My only disappointment with his presentation was that he played the same three songs each of the three times I went to visit him. It would have been nice to hear a greater variety of music on his system. Otherwise, he is a fantastic gentleman and really builds some great equipment!

I asked him to play a my master protection reel copy of Coltrane's Soultrane. It sounded amazing.

I really liked Nick's room too! I like the look and love how he has optimized his new amps to take advantage of the new KT-150's.

Nick's bringing his phono section by next weekend! Who knows what else?

Will he be bringing the Transparent Differential Cabling for the phono with him?

Not sure. I'll probably have to arrange for that phono cable with Josh or Karen. Until then will use the very good Viero phono cable. It's very quiet and it will be interesting to see if the differential balanced is even quieter. If so, might have Devis build me a special phono cable.

I think I heard Nick is out from under the wing of Paragon, is that true? If so, his company will be one to watch. He's smart, a good guy and builds great products for the money. It also doesn't hurt that he has a great corner on some of the analog products (phono, tape pre, etc).

No Nick was partnering with Larry at Paragon Sight and Sound. Now Larry is really just serving as a distributor, retailer, advisor and close friend. Problem is that Nick is in such demand for his real world talent (he was responsible for the emergency warning system you get on your phone among other things) that it's hard for him to stop and totally concentrate on audio. :) In fact, the weekend he's visiting me, he's also meeting with the Brooklyn Nets regarding a project.
