We have a beater 2007 Nissan Murano we use to haul stuff. It’ll someday be the car my kids learn to drive in. We’ve had no issues

I don't know about a diesel. What I DO know about from Mazda is an innovative upcoming compression-ignition GASOLINE engine. It works like a diesel but isn't fueled by diesel fuel.

Cold start and warm-up uses spark plugs, but in normal operation gas is ignited only by engine compression, like a diesel. Compression ratio is higher than a normal gas engine.

The result of their clever new approach is more power, higher torque, lower emissions and up to 30% greater fuel efficiency.

Thanks to the VW emissions cheating scandal, diesel cars are effectively dead, not only here, but in the EU as well. Electric tech is improving rapidly with better range, faster charging cycles and more competitive economics. By the time people forget about this scandal and the public relations "radioactivity" around diesel dies down, it will be moot. Internal combustion of all types will be on its way out.

I haven't read ALL posts here so I hope I'm not repeating. I traded my 2011 Infiniti G37 in for a 2013 Infiniti JX35 and love it. I did struggle some with HOW to drive it with the CVT (as dumb as that may sound), but it was an experience until I fully understood the method of the CVT. I kept wanting the gear shift-type feel and couldn't get it. I think Sport mode mimics a 7 speed auto but now that I know the CVT, driving it in standard mode is a great experience. There are no jerks, no hard shifts, nothing. It is just an easy, smooth ride.

At times I do feel like I hold high RPM too much like when accelerating up a steep hill, but it is a small trade-off. If you change your mindset on how to drive an automatic, you shouldn't have any issues with the CVT.

I guess it's a love / hate thing......I can't stand that grill / front end, looks like a Darth Vader step child. You can't so much as tap or touch anything with out doing damage.
 
I've snowmobiled for well over forty years, CVT's are nothing new to me. Engineers can produce a narrower trq band (like 2 cycle engines in our sleds) and the transmission compensates.
