Aurender X100S or Auralic Aries?

I love Mike's math.

Lets see how Mikie used those calculator buttons : T-1 plus L-1 = $6700

Now let me calculate the Aries ( the decked out model) using my solar non-tubed powered calculator = $1600. We could buy 4 (four) Aries for the price of one Lumin T-1 unit. Now that's math.
  • :disbelief:

I was hoping Mike had some super duper deal going on for say, $3,350 for both Lumin units. :exciting:

Of course Mike could be doing one of those Christmas , gotcha moments

You're not understanding. Add the two together and divide by two and subtract a little more. The diff will be about $1000 for the layfolk!

Whatever...I give up.

I am going to be charitable and suggest either that some of the Sharks have been hitting the Xmas Eggnog a little early or (less charitably) that some have not done their homework. The Aries is a network-enabler , nothing more. It does NOT have a DAC , you'll still need to connect it to a DAC and you will still need storage (which from my I understanding , is thrown in up to year-end by Lumin in the form of the T-1) . So if you really want to do an Apples-to-Apples comparison , add the cost of a good DAC + 2TB of storage to the price of the Aries. Actually, a truer comparison would be the Aurender X100 (which has storage & streaming but no DAC) to the Aries

Yep ya need a DAC with the Aries like the VEGA D/A at $3,499 .

I have been running the equivalent of CAP 1.5 for a few years. I already have a DAC, and am almost finished building another.

There is an Aries under the tree to open today.

Now, if I get to wanting to simplify my system, and reduce box count, the Lumin gear would be high on the list.

Congratulations! That will be a lot of fun.

The Aurender units are very nice. A local dealer here carries them and output thru good DAC sound and operate nicely. The UI is good but not quite to SooLoos levels. For me the issue with the XL is that the I/O is USB.
The strength of Sooloos is the UI.
Not to take anything away from the X100L -- I've sold a bunch -- a system at the level of yours merits a serious audition of the W20.
USB cable performance can vary quite a bit, depending upon what's at each end.

Bones...any feedback on the Aries??

Aurender has just announced its equivalent of the Aries, the Aurender N100, albeit with less connectivity (wired LAN/USB input and USB output only). Comes standard with linear power supply though. No official pricing yet but likely to be higher than Aries.

The Aurender N100 is $2499. Showing at CES, Venetian rooms 30-133 and 30-134. Also available with 1TB SSD.
My first order is due soon.

It is a pity that again there is no word about the Open Home UPnP AV standard. This means that again there is not the control flexibility that I would like to see.

OMG; I soooo wanted one. Then I saw the price :(

I mean, it's not like $2500 is outlandish in this world of ours; where some/many, spend that per/ft on ICs. But a) that's not my world, and b) I was just hoping for a competitive/competitively-priced unit, to the Aries.

It is purty though.

Chris - has there been any definitive answer on which one is better?

I'm thinking the Aries...but not sure.

No Mike, not really. All pretty new...so I imagine finding someone, who's been able to A/B, will be pretty tough.

I have to admit...I like the look(s) (that is hardware and UI) of the Aurender better :) But $1k or $1600...versus $2500; something to think about I guess.

I'm also looking at a new DAC; anyone have the skinny, on the new Wadia di122? Wadia di122 digital audio decoder

I have to say...the 321, was on my must-try list; but no DSD, was a deal-breaker. The little 122 fixes that; and...in hindsight...since I don't like to use the DAC as pre-amp/volume control...it might have been "over-kill", and the 122 is just what the doctor ordered :)

One thing's for sure; it'll be more of an apples to apples competitor, for my current Oppo HA-1. So...who's got 'em boys?

P.S. I wonder how long, before Wadia jumps in the streaming game? EDIT- looks like they have an m330 planned. $6k; ouch.

Hans,
I asked Aurender CEO Harry Lee about this. He is very aware of UPnP and replied that UPnP can be very slow and not well standardized, and they do not care to be blamed for compatibility issues unrelated to their products. I have come to hold Aurender in very high regard from their innovative yet conservative approach. The result is their stuff just works reliably and elegantly, giving genuine ease of use and pride of ownership.

Brian,
Of course it can be a choice to have a closed system. But streaming with Linn, a company that uses the UPnP AV "open home" standard, for more than 4 years now I have to say that I cannot see where Harry's arguments are base upon. I have never had a hick-up, a delay or a connection problem and everything is smooth and super fast. I don't know if the Lumin and Auralic owners on this forum have similar experiences.

I am sorry to say so but I have the feeling that he is preaching for his own parish... But of course I do believe their stuff is working fine. It is just that I would miss the openness and the option to connect with different devices at the same time.

Feel free to contact Aurender to ask. I was only relaying my understanding of what he said, and I am sure his remarks were based upon relevant experience. It has nothing to do with preaching to the choir, if that is what you are implying.

Hello everyone. My 1st post...
Thinking of a streamer and considering Aurender N100 vs Auralic Aries
Anyone compared them yet?

Have a Lampizator 5 and a temporary hummingboard based streamer.
Great sound but so far only works well via USB / HDD and I want it to use my networked NAS

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Leonard! Thank you so much for joining. Nice gear you have.

I am sure we have some members comparing those pieces now.
