Aurender W20 Review

Brian, since you are perhaps the only person posting in this thread to actually have experience with a W20, would you care to characterize the differences between a W20 and a well designed purpose made music server PC like a CAPS?, also I would personally be interested in a comparison with the W20 and S10??

Raider, I have not compared the S10 and W20 but when contemplating which one to get I asked around and was told the W20 is better. Although it costs more than twice as much as the S10 I feel I made the right choice. Although I have heard a CAPS in a customer's home for a short time it was an unfamiliar system and I had no frame of reference. In terms of open vs. closed architecture the CAPS is open while the Aurender is closed, but the latter is a toaster that just works and is utterly painless. Once you have experienced the Director app you are spoiled. So thoroughly organized and thought out.

Sorry if I haven't really answered your questions but hope this helps a bit.

Not really answering the question but when I did the comparison of the Lumin & the Aurender S10, I was really surprised how close in sound the Aurender was to my macbookpro from a WD My Passport Studio with firewire 800 feed into the mac. The Lumin I found to be slightly less detailed & a touch lazy in the bass. All went into a Meitner MA-1 dac.

Have you heard it? Didn't think so, but why would that stop you from armchair quarterbacking? I am disappointed. And not including all of the phono cartridges, cabling, etc. your system cost approaches the figure you give..

I don't have to test drive a Porche Spyder ($750,0000) to know that is stupid expensive unless you have that kind of money to burn, performance notwithstanding. That's all I said.

People could say similar things about your audio gear. I don't talk about products I don't sell, much less those I haven't heard.

I'm one of the last people to be throwing the conspicuous consumption card around but damm, 17k. I own an S10. I think Aurender makes good stuff, but damm aren't computers supposed to be getting cheaper.

Ha! Generally yes, Moore's Law & all of that. There are exceptions when it comes to anything esoteric, over-engineered, ahead of it time or rare. I recently bought an Apple Lisa circa 1983. It wasn't cheap...

Thank you Brian and Shark for the responses. Steve, you want me to dig out my NeXT computer for you.... give you a deal :D

Thanks for the link. It would have been much more informative had the reviewer compared the stripped down X100 to the S10 in sound quality (both using USB obviously).
Michael, I suggest you might want to investigate that yourself by contacting your nearest Aurender dealer for a demonstration. There is no difference between the X100S and X100L except the storage capacity.

Yes of course. Having used a S10 for for roughly a year I know Aurender's build quality is excellent. I do plan on a W20 audition in the future.

What I was pointing out was the reviewer stating that he loved the S10 and that the X100 is a stripped down S10 without the extra AES and SPDIF connections with improved USB. It would be nice the know how they compare sonically. That he was using a Mac mini makes it more difficult. A comparison between the two Aurender models would've made the review/article more compelling.

As a practical note, I can see where Aurender would not want a $3k unit to sound the same as a $7k unit and may want to control this comparison if possible (I'm not saying that they are).

I wouldn't go that far. I am sure it is a nice server, but I will bet my Bryston BDP-1 comes pretty close. For $15,000 less.

Not sure the point of baseless comments like this. I will take your money if you're serious :)

Back on topic, I owned an S10, now own an X100L and have a W20 in my system at the moment for a couple of weeks (unfortunately not mine). The USB out on the X100 is based on the W20's USB, so yes is a step ahead of the USB from the S-10. There are also two other benefits, firstly it has all the D2D circuitry from the S-10 removed so potentially less noise. Secondly a smaller chassis should = less resonance.

The difference between the X100 and the W20 is immediately obvious and easily justifies the premium of the W20 if it remains within budget. The W20 offers a more robust bottom end, exhibiting greater extension, more body, and also more control of the bass which is welcome. The soundstage widens without compromising on imaging. The presentation is smoother and more refined - vocals gaining a more organic nature. The top end sounds again more extended and yet smoother. You certainly wouldn't be disappointed with the X100, but I wouldn't demo a W20 unless your budget allows.

These are not "expensive computers", they are purpose built digital transports. No they don't have a dac, some people say this like it's a bad thing. For the same reason there is no CD drive to rip music, it's a completely SOTA component. Why would you want to be limited to an internal dac? The Lumin has one, and it's good but not great, so for me a feature that is wasted (and yes have had extensive time with a Lumin in my system too). There are not many digital transports with dual AES/EBU digital outputs to make optimal use of dual mono dacs, nor do many have word clock sync capabilities. When you experience the benefits of a clock sync, you'll understand. The W20 is not designed to be a value-for-money proposition like some players are, it's designed to be the best digital transport available at whatever cost. As a transport it bests my Esoteric K-01, that's proof enough for me.

Thanks for the insight and sharing. I still want to try one of these very badly.

Michael, what is your Lumin A1 lacking?

George:

Overall? Nothing really. I do beleive I've lost a touch in the timing department in exchange for the smoothness/lushness. And, lushness is sometimes accompanied with bloat/laziness. While I wouldn't characterize the Lumin as bloated/lazy, I do notice more resonance on certain recordings.

To put it simply, if there's better, I'd like to identify it, and then determine if it's financially viable for me.

Michael, the Lumin is far from bloated, and it has very good PRAT. If your experiencing anything like that, you might want to think about your overall system synergy.

I have to disagree about your comments on the Lumin, I've gone the other route and a good streamer is the superior way to go. There is more to digital audio than the DAC itself, and streamers are much better sounding IMHO.

Mark:

I did say I wouldn't characterize the Lumin as bloated. If we're talking semantics, let me say the the Lumin is "fuller." My impressions regarding its timing are solely based on A/B testing of it and my prior digital source (Aurender S10 & eMM DAC2X). I prefer the ease and smoothness of the Lumin. But, I do find it to be slower. Obviously it doesn't bother me enough or I would have never sold off my S10/DAC2X combo.

I'm in agreement with you regarding direct streaming from a NAS device having a wonderful ease to its delivery. I'm hoping more manufacturers take note. I do believe dCS is now capable of this if I'm not mistaken.

Don't get me wrong, I'm content with the A1 but I'm not blind to other developments in the digital arena. Not suggesting you are :).
