The femto clock is the way to go. They make the Bel Canto DAC3.7 sing.

The 1TB optional drive is an SSD, not a hard drive. Yes, you can find a hard drive for about what you mentioned, but a 1TB SSD will run you close to $500 anyway. The N100 is only suited for an SSD.

Dealers such as myself will be able to upgrade a standard N100 (purchased from me) with a 1TB SSD, but this is not an upgrade done by the customer. I suggest checking with the dealer before the purchase of an N100 if he will be offering the upgrade, as perhaps some may not.

The standard 120GB SSD in the N100 is for caching only, not for storage. The optional 1TB SSD which is used for storage is separate and in addition to the 120GB caching drive.

Thanks Brian; but I don't think you read my post carefully enough. I think I was pretty clear:

EDIT- Oh wait; I do see one contradiction. You say the optional 1T SSD, is for storage; not cache? Hmm...seems a little silly. My first thought is, why not just get an X100; but...that's a 1T SATA vs. SSD. The SSD will be much quieter and durable. So then my question is...why would anyone buy an X100? It's almost like Aurender is selling against themselves.

N100 was perfect for me! :)
 
My consultant has been working with Aurender since their prototype days. I have been consistently impressed with the sound of the W20. He got Aurender to incorporate dual wire to connect to the DAC's that need it. I will be trying their new music server when it comes out with dual wire. When I finish my ripping project, I want to be able to use my Pacific Microsonics Model Two (which is a dual wire ADAC) to playback. Right now, using Pyramix for ripping is very cumbersome to play back. I want to be able to use my ipad to control the Aurender remotely, using the music stored on my NAS (so far I have 24TB and will eventually top out at around 30TB). There are two issues that I have to contend with, one is that for the Model Two I do have to manually change sample rates. Since the vast majority of the stereo files are 192/24, I can leave it on 192/24 most all the time. For my DSD files, I will continue to use my Exasound E28 since the Aurender doesn't do multichannel, which is most of my DSD files.

Who sells a 1TB SSD for $350? Link, please. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing.

Compared the X100S, perhaps the N100 makes it redundant. We'll see.

Listen my friend: I don't want any trouble. But I'm in IT, and have built about 10 machines for audio.

A) While Mushkin may not be Apple or Microsoft; they're not Joe's SSDs either. So if your point is "oh...some POS, no-name SSD is $350; that doesn't count", you'd be off-base. B) If the 1T option, really is mSATA; that's about the dumbest marketing decision I've ever heard...lol.

It's just my opinion...and I'm not denigrating the product; hell I bought one. But I do find these audio companies, take "advantage" of non-computer types (i.e. your typical audiophile); by charging way too much, for what anyone can pick up off the shelf (i.e. $500, for an $80 3.5" HDD).

As for going mSATA; I'll believe it, when I see it. But if it's true...I think it's a poor choice.

It's their choice. They are Unix and Linux folks and are not new to the field. In the long term you'll come to appreciate their approach to things, though.

Relax. My quip was intended purely as humor. Guess you're not a Three Stooges fan.
 
Congrats on your new N100. I have owned the X100L going on a year now. I love it. Fantastic server, sounds great, outstanding app, and has never hiccuped ... flawless performance. I am glad they now offer an option without an internal hard drive. It allows them to cast a wider net and capture those that are apposed to spinning drives inside their servers. I can tell you from personal experience, the x100l is silent. I sit only 7 feet from the unit and frequently listen at low volume. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the X100L feeding my McIntosh MCD1100 .... which is soon to be replaced when my Esoteric K-01X arrives in a few days.

That's great to hear. Yes...the N-model, was the tipping point for me. I don't want an HDD in the listening room; even though I suspect, as you've confirmed. a hi-end model like Aurender...would take great pains to isolate the noise. It's more just that...I have a 12-drive server, that stores all my audio, video, computer files; and a home network. Why would I want to pay, for that which I don't need?

I'm curious if you're an TIDAL user? When Mike sends me his Aries, here are the areas I think I will compare:

- Build quality/aesthetics/ergonomics
- Ease of set-up/use/UI
- TIDAL integration

and oh yeah...overall SQ, lol.

Can't Wait!
 
Right now I can't decide on Auralic Aries, Aurender X100 or N100.

I suspect Aurender might win on SQ... I have the Auralic Vega DAC and want to make the right decision (with SQ being paramount) on driving it.

Looking forward to hopefully finding out which one sounds the best and if the Aurender N and X themselves differ in SQ.

I don't recommend it, for two reasons:
- There are certain guidelines Aurender has for installation.
- Trying to do it yourself voids the warranty.

Comparing these pitfalls to paying a few bucks more (MSRP on the likely drive to be used is $500), I think most people would opt for the latter.

If you didn't catch it earlier in the thread...Brian is saying the storage option on the N100, is mSATA.
