Aurender N10

Welcome! The N10 is incredible. For those on a tighter budget and only needing USB, the N100H is also great. People regularly comment that adding the Aurender removes any digital "hash" they heard previously with their Mac/PC/etc.

Mike, how would you describe the difference in the USB output between the N10 and N100H?

VERY close. But the N10 is just a little better. A little quieter, smoother, bigger sound. Out of the box, the N10 sounded a smidgen better than the N100H and it's improved steadily as its broken in. The best analogy I can give is that the N100H is the equivalent to a great stereo amp (D'Agostino Stereo for example) and the N10 is the equivalent to a great pair of monoblocks (D'Agostino monos for example). The N10 just things a little better and gives you a little more flexibility. The N100H will satisfy most peoples needs and they will be very pleased at the sonic upgrade over a Mac/PC. The N10 is for the person wanting more internal storage, more flexibility with Digital Outputs and they don't mind paying the premium for that extra % in quality.

Would agree that the differences between the USB outputs are small, but it's the sound of the total package that matters, and I find the differences between the N100 series and the N10 to be significant at the very least when used with an excellent USB DAC. Wider, deeper soundstage, richer harmonics, lower noise, deeper bass, etc. Both, though, convey the music in a natural way that makes the sound more natural and relaxed yet with more detail.

Can you explain what you mean? If you are only using the USB output and the difference is small then what else is there? Just trying to understand and see if the N10 is for me.

Here's a comparison between the USB and AES/EBU outputs of the N10, although it should be noted that this was on the TotalDac D1-Dual, where the preferred input option is AES/EBU. So, this preference may change for DACs with optimised USB inputs.

Obviously, the better power supply on the N10 would contribute to the difference vs the N100H. I wonder though if an N100H modified with a better power supply would approach the N10 in performance. There is a local guy who has modified the X100 to accept an LPS http://www.mysoundaffairs.com/collections/power/products/plixir-bdc-for-aurrender. I am sure that it can be done for the N100H too.

Any "mods" would void the warranty.

Interesting that he too preferred AES/EBU over USB. Both outputs are excellent.

It does.

The mod involves a balanced AC transformer and dual stage DC regulation though. YMMV, etc.

Hello everyone, I'm considering the purchase of an Aurender N10. I will be mostly streaming digital FLAC files from my Synology NAS, but what about Apple AirPlay? My wife (who is not an audiophile) will definitely want to stream the Apple Music service through her iPhone/iPad to whatever network music device I purchase. Can the Aurender N10 do this?

Yes, Aurender supports AirPlay.

If you don't plan to put music files on the Aurender's internal drive(s), why get the N10, with its 4TB of storage? Why not just get the N100?

Or, conversely, why not put your music on the Aurender's internal drives?

That's a fair question. Aside from the increased sound quality of the N10 due to things like the improved USB output section and OCXD clock, my entire system (McIntosh preamp/amps, Rega TT) is all black. Whatever else I add to the system has to be available in black as well, and unfortunately I don't think the N100 comes in a black option.

If I do end up on the Aurender side of things (considering Lumin U1 as well), I would very likely use the internal storage of the Aurender exactly as you do.

No, the N100 is not available in all black. Aside from that as you point out, the sound quality of the N10 is substantially better, although the N100 outperforms a surprising number of competitors.
