To be honest, these digital shootouts are fun, but these products are often more alike than not. I often feel like I'm some judge asked to pick the tallest midget.
So, the convenience and flexibility and overall sonic quality of the Lumin makes it a winner in my books. And it's not just me. Lumin owners feel the same way. Messing around with multiple boxes, drives, POS Windows OS, is just a pain.
The only digital I've ever heard that really was amazing and head and shoulders above the other things I had at that time, was the EAR. The EAR Acute 4 stack intrigues me.
I think you are right. They could have and they will not. But others will fill the gap.If Linn didn't have their head up their butts when it comes to DSD, they could have owned this market.
Given that Linn went to extremes to knock DSD, I don't see that happening any time soon.
question:
is the ipod sending the music to the aries or is the ipod just to control it ?
We had a big DAC shootout 18 months ago and it was a blast.

Is that a linear power supply with the Auralic? I will be purchasing a linear power supply for my new network server soon. Currently I'm using a SMPS to power the server.
+1 Mike. I've been a single-source, digital guy...for 10+ years now; so the DAC is my source. I've tried a lot of them, and while there are differences to be heard; often time, it is just that...different.
As long as you're doing an apples to apples comparison, "better" becomes a matter of subtlety and taste at best. I tend to lean toward ESS chips. Sure...they're ultra-detailed; but I'll take it in my DAC. Since it's the starting point, from whence everything else will originate; give it to me straight, warts and all...and I'll decide if I want to alter/sweeten, down the signal path.
How would you connect that up Mike (for DSD)?
Also, I assume the HDMI is 12S connection, but there is no market standard, so no guarantee that any random pairing will be compatible. Do the Bryston and Oppo speak the same HDMI language? Where would theAries come in?
+1 with exceptions
i listened the last 7 years with the nagra cd player wich has a good dac inside.......well, i replaced this internal dac with the nagra hd dac and its not just different![]()
Unless you maen to have the Oppo for playing back physical disc in addition to the Aries that plays files?
If so, cheaper and better SQ to rip the disc and place on a NAS. No need for Oppo at all.
First off, (I am pretty sure) the output from the Oppo HDMI is NOT DSD. DRM forces it to be LPCM, ie 24/88.Yes. That's what I mean.
How can you EASILY rip a SACD to DSD? And don't say a modded PS3 - that ain't easy for most!
