Audioshark - making it better

Here here to the computer retarded for posting pics!

Guys-I don't know how much simpler it could be to post pics. The toolbar at the top has icons and the third one from the right says "insert image." You click on that icon and then browse to where you saved the picture(s) you want to upload to your thread. This sort of reminds me when Compaq computer seriously considered adding an "any key" to their keyboards because of the deluge of calls they received when the software said to hit "any key" in order to install software and people wanted to know where the "any key" was on their keyboard because they couldn't find it.

I am not interested in fancy and expensive cars, watches, guns, and cigars. I personally benefit most from input from audio manufacturers like James Tanner of Bryston. I still visit another site daily just to check if ron-c has made any new posts. Nothing more reliable than from the 'horses's mouth'.

Great forum already. Introducing manufacture sponsors will inevitably allow them to dictate moderation like over there, where those Ferarris and the other bling are preserved, oops I mean PARKED for TRADING.

The moderation policy here is an absolute winner for members. Nothing worse than reading aficionado puppy tripe written by moderators like it is done on the other manufactured sponsored forum.

Agree that something new and unique may be necessary to DRIVE a larger membership base.

I'm not adverse to advertising where it actually benefits the forum rather than stifles. You may wish to encourage advertising for retailers and installers. Typically dealers that are not aligned to a single brand. If you can somehow internationally regionalise the format, it could open up the community a bit more.

Consider the infomercial or magazine format.

Home automation is a growth area. Perhaps that thread can be expanded with advertising.

Also agree with the "LIKE" button.

Tapatalk is OK but it is not great. Being generic, it is better supported. It has image upload size limitations. Most smartphones by default exceed the limit making it difficult to snap what you are listening to now. The other issue is that trade off as to who controls those images if they are uploaded via Tapatalk...Tapatalk?

Lots of high quality images is always a winner and encouraging membership to post pictures using a simple snap and post system is key. Eg. I hate Facebook, but posting images straight from a mobile device like a smartphone is one of its strengths that helps drive its content.

Actually there is one issue. Pics post as a thumbnail; then one has to go in and find the attachment, copy the URL, hit edit and then repost using

Good idea Mike, since everything can be improved. Just have to be careful to not make a change just for the sake of change.

Anyway, try not to get into forum overload. Another site that aspires to be the 'Best' has WAY to many forums.

Another suggestion is a reiteration of one I asked months ago. I use my iPad at home, and sometimes (to many times) I accidentally touch the AudioShark ICON instead of 'New Posts'. This takes me to the home page. There really is not any need to have a link associated with the ICON. Along the same line, keep every page layout the same. For example, on this page 'New Posts' is the first item on the left, but on other pages it is second (over top the Shark ICON). Make 'New Posts' always the first item on the left.

Other than that, I am happy with the current site.

All great suggestions. I'm taking notes.

This really is a great forum. Even for those of us who just have... let's call it 'audio aspirations'. And as great as the gear being discussed is, it's really the attitude that draws me in. Respectful and a refreshing lack of trolling and abuse. Love it. Please don't change that...

Ideas? What about interviews with subject matter experts that could then be commented on? Or Reddit style AMAs? What about using tags to search makes and models?

Nice idea Mike, not sure if a formal well organized "how to section" might help. For example pearls for properly setting up speakers, or how to move all your hirez files to your new network player, or how to regain album art that never loaded and why and how I treated my room to make it acoustically more favorable. Personally my computer audio skills are my biggest challenge. I think all our members who are less experience, or more experience seasoned pros who are willing to teach or share from the errors they may of encountered may benefit the whole community. I think perhaps 5-10 general topics that r easily accessed for a particular topic with SIMPLE to incorporate instructions might benefit a great many of us. Plus perhaps avoid some of the embarrassment of just asking and still find the answers somewhat complex. Anyway just a thought. Happy holidaysto all

Nick

All in all, the simplicity of this site serves it's purpose well. That said, here are some ideas worth kicking around...

- Move the "General Discussions" board up to a more readily accessible part of the forum.

- I like the Reddit/AMA idea. You'd need to modify the rules though. Since this is a small Hi-Fi forum with a (relatively) small audience, the whole "Ya got a few hours to riff with person X" may not work out too well. So in the place of that rule, I think it would be best for the AMA to span a full day or two. This would give members plenty of time to ask questions, and would allow the AMA'r to answer them at his or her leisure.

- On the surface of things, I like the live-chat idea. It would be a super cool way for members to connect and to make new friends. The big caveat is that the more popular the chat gets, the mo' problems ya get. You'll need moderators, people will cry and complain, etc etc..

Otherwise, I like this forum - and if nothing ever changed, I'd be cool with it. Either way, thanks for all of your effort Mike. :)

Do we get to do live chat with "the girls"? :fingers:

always thought the members system forum was in a weird spot. maybe moving it up to the top audio area would keep people updating their threads. i rarely scroll down that far, and often forget that even exists. chat would be great addition. other than that great forum great people. thanks.

Hmm...the last forum I visited regularly had this interesting system where I would get PMs and penalty points whenever I publicly disagreed with the owner's friends. Don't do that. Otherwise, great site. I happen to love the tapatalk app. I find it totally easy to use and I've never visited on a computer. I kind of miss some of the functionality like signature lines, but ease of use can't be beat.

I loved the Tapatalk until 2 hours ago but this update is not good at all. They made more difficult to see the time line with update. Not sure Apple and Android doing the update same time but not liking this update at all :(

+1
they may need to be moderated (to avoid becoming free or almost free advertising).

IME you can rarely go wrong with more manufacturers' forums, although they may need to be moderated (to avoid becoming free or almost free advertising). Fortunately most of the high-end manufacturers seem interested in disseminating their knowledge and enthusiasm and hope that it eventually results in more sales.

IMHO James Tanner falls very close to the free advertising thing for me. Just MHO
Good point. We had a few additional manufacturers participating, but they wanted me to police/ban members who spoke out against their products. I refused to do that.

IMHO - all high end audio manufacturers should be following the example James Tanner has set. Bravo to James and the entire team at Bryston for getting it!

In a Bryston forum, I beg to differ, unless I've missed him posting elsewhere & spruiking outside of the Bryston "parking" zone! I can't see the problem, I think James has been exemplary. If he was doing whenever & wherever he could I would agree totally. Then again, i've only been here a short time.
