No wonder I see a ton of DAC8 for sale. DAC9 could be a hit that DAC8 was.

What's interesting is that the preamp has the same tube complement as the old Ref 5se. I wonder how close it sounds to the 5se.

If the LS28 pre is very close to Ref5SE performances -> then the stated pricing level is quite reasonable.

Another upgrade path - another broken promises :wacko:

Or do the 2 tubes (6550C & 6H30P) at the PSU circuit also play critical roles in the SQ reproduction ?

And sone very good information about DAC9:
"The new DAC9 uses two completely different paths to the D/A converts. One path is for PCM music files from 44.1kHz to 384kHz sample rates and the other is for DSD music files at 1x and 2x DSD clock rates.

For PCM music files we use two different TCXO crystal MASTER oscillators, one for 44.1, 88.2, 176.4 and 352.8 sample rates and the other for 48, 96, 192 and 384kHz sample rates; this assures integer decoding so their are no interpolation distortion issues. The DSD music path converts the DSD files to a TRUE Direct-Stream Digital signal running at 2.8224 MHZ or 5.6448 MHZ."

Only listening will tell. Thay say they have designed the digital part fully inhouse (so it is not designed by McIntosh), which can both good and bad, depending how good their digital engineer was.
