Are you about ready to upgrade your iPhone or Android smartphone?

You'll need a new sim card. Your carrier should give it to you for free . . . but some stores will charge for it (typically $20). The format of the sim card has changed over the years so that's why you'll need a new one.

I really suggest buying the 'no carrier specified' unlocked version directly from Apple. You can put any sim card in it.

I just upgraded to a 13 Pro Max last night. I usually go as long as I can without upgrading since the entire procedure is a pain in the ass. I spent 3.5 hours at Verizon yesterday because I of course got the “new guy” and somehow, despite me telling him 5 times to make sure this new phone goes with my phone number and not my wife’s, he assigned it to my wife, disabling her phone while she’s at work on the Covid floor. She uses her phone a lot. MORON! He then has to get Verizon support on the line to put everything back the way it was. I had to have my wife paged at work to tell her the shit show that was going on and explain why her phone wasn’t working.

I then got home and started the data migration process, of course, it took about 10 tries and reboots for the old phone to see the new phone and begin the data transfer. It never works as advertised.

Then pairing the new phone with the Apple watch was this morning. Of course, neither sees the other and I had to erase the Apple Watch, pair it as a new phone and then restore its data from a back up. [emoji35]

I left the world of technology for this reason.

That's a real bummer Mike, a waste of your precious time.

Do you still have the 13 Pro Max, and if yes how much storage (model you picked)?

Phil, good to know. I just got lucky and it was a company store (on Cattleman), but unlucky when the guy was fiddling with this iPad looking thing for 10 minutes and looks at me and says “sorry, it’s my first day on the job.” [emoji15]

What I found most amazing was that his colleagues were not all that helpful to the poor fellow. At one point, he put the Verizon super tech support lady on speaker phone and I started to trouble shoot with her as this fellow was clearly in over his head.

My biggest reason for upgrading to the 13ProMax was battery life. I don’t care about the camera as no amount of technology can fix my shitty photography skills (Joe teases me about this all the time) or any other new “feature”. Battery life for me is huge and I know that’s come a long way the past few iterations.

You are right about the battery life; the 13 Pro Max is near the top of the world in that department, ...huge battery life upgrade.

Now on the cameras; the iPhone 13 Pro Max will make you a better photographer, and videographer. One very important thing to know: You want the 256GB storage model (or higher...512GB or 1TB) because the 128GB model CANNOT use the new ProRes video mode.
So it is absolutely imperative for the 13 Pro and Pro Max models to not go below 256GB of ROM storage. 128GB is simply not enough for the ProRes larger files.
And no matter if you are a professional or not it is a feature of the highest end for the very first time ever in Apple iPhone's life history. It's like . . . the Webb telescope they'll send into space in December; it'll see over 15 billion light years in the universe, possibly helping us to know where it all began.

Mike, I think the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max (256GB minimum) are the most advanced and performing mobile phones of the entire planet; and not only for battery life and cameras, but almost everything else too. We are getting closer to quasi perfection in the world of mobile communication, the exploration and discovery of the universe, and everything that is inside of it. :) ...Including the kitchen sink and the high fidelity stereo sound system.

Excellent Bart!

A SIM card is usually free from where your purchase your phone.

Here's the Best Way to Transfer Data From Your Old iPhone to a New iPhone 13 - MacRumors

I'm glad I finally started this thread (it was in the back of my head for quite some time), because right from the bat I know that Dave and Bud are going to benefit tremendously in upgrading to the iPhone 13 mini, without an ounce of a doubt.

Battery life is only one aspect where the iPhone 13 family is a huge improvement.
Some professional users rank the new iPhone 13 series the best or near the top in battery life.
This is a huge advancement for Apple in the year 2021.

But there is much more; the way they implemented the A15 Bionic chip with the larger batteries makes them super efficient in long lasting time.

One other thing; for the very first time in the history of Apple iPhones they have finally given us a 120HZ Adaptive refresh rate in the 13 Pro and Pro Max models.
Why they didn't give that feature in the regular 13 and 13 mini models is unfortunate, a poor decision. Apple's strategy here is to wait furthermore till next year with the iPhone 14 and 14 mini. Personally I find this irritating from Apple. Anyway, the 13 and 13 mini are still a must upgrade for older iPhone owners, like Dave and Bud here who prefer a smaller screen and much improved battery time. ...In particular for Bud, as mentioned by others, with a swollen (dangerous) older battery.

5 years of Apple support is awesome; but remember this too: rechargeable batteries don't last forever. After 2-3 years they lose their power, and 5 years is time to upgrade because in the world of mobile smartphones is like your first turntable when you were between the tender age of 12 and 16. It's a general figure of speech in the reality of the phone's business.

The iPhone 11 series were and still are awesome.
The 12 series is better.
The new iPhone 13 series is a quantum leap in the utmost important aspects.

Anyone who has an iPhone older than the 11 Series (including the iPhone 11 series) has an advantage to upgrade to the 13 series. If money is an issue I will lend it to you and you can repay me whenever you feel comfortable with, no charge, no interest.

No Android smartphone users yet. :) ...Call me unshaken, iPhones are tough to beat.
Nothing in the whole world of mobile phones can approach the Apple A15 Bionic chip (5 nm) with CPU Hexa-core (2x3.22 GHz Avalanche + 4xX.X GHz Blizzard), nothing...no Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series (865+, 870, 888+, 898, ...) or higher stuff...that'll be the day.

If your iPhone 6 overheats from laying in the sun on your boat, DO NOT swish it in the water to cool it off quickly. Unless you want a new iPhone 12 Pro. :)

Everything about the 12 Pro is better, and the camera is amazing, especially in low light. I’ll pass on the 13 for now, though.

iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12: Verdict

"You expect phones to improve from one generation to the next, but the differences in our iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 comparison are quite stark. The better storage options, faster processor and camera improvements would be enough to make this a significant upgrade. Throw in improved battery life and — in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro models — fast-refreshing displays, and this is a big step up from last year.

As good as the iPhone 12 models were, they're no match for what iPhone 13 delivers. And that's great news if you're in the market for an iPhone right now."

Do I just need to swap a card between the 7 and the 13 to make it operational?

No. If you want to keep all the apps and data on your new phone, you will have to follow a procedure that includes backing up all your data.

Depending on your carrier and the type of plan you have, they may offer you a “free” upgrade.

In any event, DO get rid of that phone right away. If it were to explode in your pocket, it can cause serious harm to you.

Just ordered an iPhone 13 Mini with 256K memory. Hopefully this will last at least five years.

We’ve had our 13s for a few weeks and like them. We have the larger ones. We order Series 7 watches at Verizon this weekend - double the trade in value for our old watches than Apple is giving …

Those are the top guns in 2021 and most likely in 2022 as well. ...And beyond ... till the iPhone 14 and 15 of course, when the top Notch and Lightning port will be gone forever.

It's basically the same as the 13 Pro Max except for the screen size (6.1" vs 6.7").
And the phone's size and weight of course. And, the Pro Max has one more core of GPU (5-core graphics vs 4). ...Bigger battery, much better battery life, slightly better performance measurements of the chip processor. ...And the price ($200 difference / base price).
Everything else between the 13 Pro Max and the 13 Pro are the same (cameras included).

☆ Mike bought the best one: iPhone 13 Pro Max with 1TB of internal ROM (storage).
He's ready to conquer the world now with his new device, make no mistake about it. :)

I didn’t realize the phone could catch on fire since it has been this way for years. So I am looking at the iPhone 13 Mini.

Do I just need to swap a card between the 7 and the 13 to make it operational?

Someone replied that I would need a new SIM card for the iPhone 13. That is NOT TRUE. I just went to ATT and they just swapped the SIM card between the 7 and 13. Oh well, I needed a nice drive to charge the car battery.

Correct, just swapping your SIM card from your old iPhone to the new is all you need.

* Charging the battery is good, charging the gas to the person who said that you needed a new SIM card is good too. :)

How do you like your new iPhone 13 mini Bud? Just too new yet to check all the cool features and the super fast processor and the quality of the cameras? You'll be flying high ...

Too early to tell, and still getting used to it. On one hand it is the same, but still it's different. I'm getting used to not having a button to push to activate it, but swipe up instead.

I always did the 'double tap' to activate it, or if you just pick it up it turns on (motion detection).
