Are Bose Speakers Bad?

Interesting read. He kept mentioning that they are the best at what they do. That would be Advertising and Name Recognition first, then a different approach to sound.

IMO, others have been more successful with Omni directional solutions.

So is it that those who live on East Street next door to the Jone's family start with Bose, then move up to Bang & Olufsen and finally reach Omni nirvana with German-Physiks?

Cut the chase and go straight for the German Physiks if budget permits because your next door neighbour knows nothing about HiFi.

I remember when the Bose 901 III was first released back in the mid 70's. I was still in high school and a friend of mine had them set up in his basement. I was green with envy and I would impose myself on his listening time with freshly bought albums. The sound was very impressive for what it was back then. I viewed the 901's as an aspirational speaker.

Fast forward 40 years: I'm having someone assist me in moving a very heavy piece of electronics into my listening room in the last month for an in home demo. He takes one look at my 7' tall speakers present in the room here in Chicago and says "wow what did those cost?" My stock reply is many thousands of dollars to which he replies, "gee, do they sound better than Bose?"

So I would say that Bose is the standard bearer of speakers as far as reputation goes with the general public.

And I don't think that is a bad thing. Maybe some small fraction of those people that purchased Bose may eventually think to themselves, "there has got to be something better than this." That could be, just may be the beginning of a prospective audiophile's journey.

Back in the day the first "supposedly "high end speaker I had was the 901, at least that's what all the mainstream audio press was writing about (High Fidelity mag as I recall)! I was still in high school and was able to save up for a used pair. That eventually led to a second pair that I stacked on top of the first pair. Than saved up enough to score a used Phase Linear 700 amp. Boy, could that system crank.....:woot:....anyway after awhile I was thinking that there was something very wrong with the sound.....and than I read about this strange looking speaker that looked like a space heater that was made in England.....yes....the Quad 57!.....well I acquired a pair and never looked back.
Cheers,

The last sentence of the article says it all.
"what ever product sounds good, to YOU."

My other half listens to her sound design electronics and distortion lab speakers. She couldn't be happier. I've got my "high end" vintage electronics.

Whatever makes the music come alive for you is the place to be.
