Apple for Music server?

I am curious how many are using a Apple computer as a music server, and if so what software?

Mike,

I recently had help from E. putting together a music server, I'll post some pics soon I get home.

No but I'm interested...I do stream radio and MOG from my iPad and MacBook Pro though.

Dewey you aren't using Apple except as what it should be, though - a glorified remote control (and handheld porn viewer). ;)

Mike - as much as I hate to admit this (given that we are an all Mac home), I recently conducted a Mac Mini vs CAPS 3.0 Carbon shootout. The CAPS 3.0 Carbon was the clear winner.

Info here: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/496-computer-audiophile-pocket-server-c-p-s-v3-carbon/

Purchased from here: http://shop.smallgreencomputer.com/CAPS-v3-Carbon-CAPS3-Carbon.htm

I also added a Red Wine Power Supply for the CAPS 3.0 Carbon from here: http://redwineaudio.com/components/black_lightning Note: this is on a 2 month back order.

Mike, all you do is download and install JRiver Media Center and JRemote for your ipad/iphone and you are all set to control your music. Note that the internal storage of the CAPS 3.0 is limited (for a reason) and you are best to store your music on an external USB drive or NAS Drive (such as a Synology NAS).

I am using a Mac Mini, into a Berkeley USB, into Berkeley Alpha DAC 2. Software is Amarra. Very happy with my setup. Beats any of my earlier digital front ends, by a wide margin.

2010 Mac Mini with iTunes. I have Amarra and BitPerfect, but they are rarely use them.

I'm using a Mac Mini w/Audirvana+. I've tweaked the OS using some great tips I've found on the 'net, including some from Mike (HiFiGuy528). My files are loaded on an Oyen Digital HDD. I've been thinking about going the CAPS 3.0 route after hearing how much Mike likes it. It may be my summer project...

I half wonder if I had a newer Mac mini, made some of those tweaks you mention and tried the new JRiver for Mac, that the result would have been closer. Ted and another guy, told me it still isn't close. My gut feeling is that the secret sauce is in the SoTM USB card. That thing is impressive. It can have its own power supply!

I'm happy with my current computer set-up. I'm a Mac guy at heart, although I do have a pc running Win7, and love the ease of use of everything. But if the CAPS build sounds better, well, enough said. Maybe there should be a separate CAPS 3.0 thread...:D

I'm a Mac guy also and am happy to say that I don't own a windows machine!

Our web guy dislikes windows also, says a new windows computer takes a day to setup, 15 minutes to enter personal stuff and a complete day of update after update. But on the positive side windows is starting to mimic the look of Mac.

I've been playing with this build E. helped me, and so far it's been working flawlessly. It literally took me about 2hrs from installing the OS7 to complete all updates..

I use and iMac with the Library stored on a Apple Time Capsule.

I use both a Sonos Connect and a AppleTV. I plan on using a MacBook to a USB DAC and some sort of add on software to iTunes to play better than CD stuff.
