Burn in, well I could hear a big distinct difference from the first hour to the, I’d say 40th hour. Very slightly gradual till I got to 90 hours. And it sounded spectacular at 40 hours, I must say!
 
On new products burn in usually require you to past the 90day CC return date.

Typically 300 hrs before u can really hear a difference ..
 
Harbeth claims that their speakers will sound as good out of the box until their final day. No break in required.

However, with my new Harbeth I noticed a distinct improvement after about 3-weeks. It surprised me actually because I did not plan on any burn period for them.

Unless a manufacturer breaks the speaker in before boxing I don't see how there could not be break in time.

That was my belief also. This is why I was surprised when I read on their website that burn in is not necessary. I can say in no uncertain terms they definitely benefit from a break-in period.

I agree with you Randy. I can't imagine them NOT having benefited from a break in period.
 
If the loudspeaker is not a crossover-less wide-band single driver design, the burn-in process is a roller coaster since each driver breaks in differently. A woofer, midrange and tweeter are physically vastly different. And as they break-in coherence and integration WILL vary widely.

We break-in speakers for a week at the factory LOUD (at nights) 24/7. That's equivalent to a year's break-in playing them 3 hours a night after you take them home (do the math). Hence, we confidently tell our customers that the speakers will only require minimal break-in after you take them home. But they will continue to improve for the next couple of years.

I do similar as I have a room and gear dedicated just to burn in equipment as it comes in for me to check out.

I have a cheap solid state amp and DAC I use to burn in new gear, speakers and cables that way I don't put use on my tubes in my main gear.

Cables receive 400 hours, speakers 400-500 hours, gear 350-400 hours.

Some gear needs longer. I found the Aqua La Scala DAC I had needed close to 600+ hours!

Face to face and out of phase , properly matched barely any sound at break in levels …..

I've found that my crossovers break in differently when wired out of phase - especially with an amplifier that has the negative speaker terminal at ground. With a fully differentially balanced output power amplifier (these are rare), that might be fine. But since I cannot guarantee that every amplifier used by my customers are balanced output, I prefer not to do it this way.
 
So now the question is being asked by global distributors and dealer - what does Tannoy do with all the junk inventory sitting in China they can't do anything with?

  • Do they dump it for pennies on the dollar to people in China?
  • Do they destroy the inventory so as not to make the brand even more worthless regarding existing inventory distributors are sitting on and can't give away?
  • Have they paid the bills they ran out on in the UK such as their landlord for the supposed 'factory'? (I know who now owns that building and what they are doing with it)?
  • Upscale is STILL unable to give its inventory away even at 50% off.
  • Good news is they didn't have any actual manufacturing equipment in their "factory" in the UK they had to sell (they sold it all off years ago when moving production to China) other than a couple of cordless drills.

Hmmmm.......boy would I feel silly if I were posting in the past this was all fake news.

Depending on what source you believe, there is 7+ YEARS of inventory left to sell through.

That was before they lost their US distributor, German Distributor and several other distributors so in essence they have no one actually selling the gear any longer. Some industry people are claiming that makes it effectively a near infinite supply on hand with no one actually able to sell or support it and there being near zero demand for the product (people-in-the-know are claiming they were at about 1/30 of their previous sell through rates before they lost all the distribution). No one wants to buy the Chi-noy stuff at almost (figuratively) any price no matter how low.

To put it in numbers - last year when they had a new aggressive distributor, they sold less than one Ferrari's worth of product in the USA.

Over the course of time the value of the vintage Tannoy will continue to climb, and the storage costs associated for holding inventory that by some previous distributor claims have close to a 50% problem rate, a brand that has virtually no marketing behind it, and virtually no support for issues or repairs with the Chi-noy versions, will be more than you'd ever be able to sell them for.

And on top of that Fyne and other legendary brands similar to Tannoy that are relaunching will most likely effectively kill and of thwart what tiny desire there ever was for new-Tannoy.

Anything is possible for sure. But this was a self-made implosion due to arrogance, ego and pure stupidity.

Based on what's been happening I wouldn't even offer them 5 cents on the dollar for the inventory.
