THANKS TO ALL OF YOU! especially Joeinid and JadeDavid and Mike Bovaird!

this is a great hobby, listening to music (first) and learning about equipment (second)

OK, my goal:

KEEP my harbeth 30.2 speakers.

KEEP my Triode corp. tube amp, 50 watts class A

KEEP my two wonderful REL subwoofers.

IMPROVE my CD player. currently OPPO 105, sounds good to me

CONSIDER a turntable or computer streaming music.

OK- to make an improvement i can HEAR, would i want to get a great CD player, or, use OPPO to spin the disc and add a great DAC, like Schiit or Lampizator. i am ordering some SACD's, but have a large collection of normal CD's

i want to hear any and all ideas! speak freely!

i hope all of you count your blessings, whether they be good health, a family, anything, and have a great Christmas!

sincerely,
Bob

Add something like the Directstream DAC with Bridge II or the Directstream Jr and you get a great DAC that is updated for free on a regular basis and a built in streamer. Using your OPPO connected to the DAC is more than an adequate solution.

Check out the Bryston BDA3 as a new DAC. You can hook it up via HDMI to the Oppo. That’s a great addition to what you have in place.

Add a dedicated power line to your system and try some aftermarket power cables, if you have not already.

The others are on the money with a DAC.

Get a great sounding DAC and also consider computer audio and use Roon with HQ Player software. You can still use the Oppo spinner for you CD's if you decide not to rip all you CD's for the computer.

I agree with the PS Audio Direct Stream. It is versatile with it's various software versions so you can tailor the sound to your liking and it sounds great.

Bob, I'll throw a prawn on ya barbie. Ask Mike, yes again, he'll tell you wait for the new model dac coming out from the line he just picked up....

:hey:
thanks guys! Kev, i hope you get a sunburn. 2 degrees fahrenheit and awful here!!!!

OK, a high end audio store told me to consider getting a better CD player because my OPPO 105 is not a good enough transport. the notion is, that the OPPO does video, audio, blu ray, does too much for $1,000. so there are compromises. the guy in the store suggested a Rega saturn R is a better CD player, and i could get that.

obviously there are the LUXMAN and ESOTERIC high end players.

my dumb question today is- should i get a decent DAC and use my OPPO to spin the disc, or just get a BETTER cd player?

best,

bob and Thanks!!!!

Get a Luxman D-05u or D-06u and call it a day. Both have USB inputs should you ever want to try the computer audio game.

Esoteric just had a big price increase.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your 105 as a transport unless you are a dealer trying to sell you something else like the Rega's which are no "better". Keep it in place and experiment with different DAC's if you are looking to change the sound you have.

I second what Jack has said. "Nothing wrong with your 105 as a transport". There are many great DAC's out there like the Yggdrasil and PS Audio.
The PS direct stream may be a bit above your budget but they do make a Jr.
Furthermore it is probably in your future to go to a Server or computer based system along with streaming from sources such as Tidal.
This would further reduce the use of a CD player.

Bob, since you are primarily a CD/SACD kind of guy and you've already made big steps in improving your system, a better CD/SACD player is the best way to go for you (and one with USB for possible computer audio in the future). I own the Oppo BDP-105D myself. I had it in the store for many months. It's good to play movies and for a hard core budget system and its a terrific Swiss Army knife Audio, Video piece. But sonically, IMO, it is not at the caliber of a $5000+ CD/SACD player IMO. YMMV.
