We are very active participants in a local seniors organization, with members mostly between 70 and 100. They want to stay in their homes and not move to assisted living, even when some can afford the $10K per month cost. Many of the members are not technologically saavy and we help them with setting up computers and internet connections so that they can stay connected and not suffer from social isolation, the greatest problem that we see. However, many are not financially affluent enough to pay for the technology and high speed internet. So we have been working with neighbors who are willing to share some of their excess bandwidth to help their neighbors connect. We provide free, used computers and ipads which have been donated by our members, volunteers and donors, and volunteers (often high school students) who help with set up and instruction.
If Amazon can provide free high speed internet to people who cannot afford it, this would be a boon to a population who could really benefit.
Elon Musk with his Space X Starlink satellite system is planning to include locating the small satellite dishes in areas of sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia where the signal can be shared in a community at low or no cost, bringing high speed internet to populations who could really benefit from it.
