A Japanese company Trio marketed electronics internationally under the name Kenwood. Kenwood did very well in the consumer electronics. Nakaichi and Jiro Kasuga along with a few other colleagues left Kenwood to form Kensonics with the goal of producing smaller quantities of no compromise audio gear, in 1972. Although Kensonic operated independently it's not like they quit and left Kenwood still had some ownership in Kensonic and early Accuphase had some cosmetic familiarity. Kensonic was the company initially and Accuphase was the brand they put on the electronics. Kensonic changed the corporate name to Accuphase laboratories in 1982. Interestingly the Kasuga brothers were the ones initially started in 1946 with Kasuga Radio which became Trio.
In 1953 Kasuga Radio introduced their first Amateur Radio, they continued with Amateur radio under Trio and Kenwood names. Some of the best.
Interesting that the Kasuga brothers had to develop a separate company to produce high end feeling mass market company like Kenwood was not conducive to producing that type of product. Kenwood did produce a few higher level lines that performed above the regular consumer products. One of the longest lasting being the Basic series. I always thought "Basic" was an odd name for a flagship, what do I know though.
I sold Kenwood in the late 80's/early 90's. It's not like the first time I heard Accuphase I thought that reminds me of Kenwood. Now that I know though I feel there is a similarity of character in the bass region. Kenwood had a distinct character in that area compared to the other Japanese receivers and amplifiers.
