I'm thinking about setting up a NAS/server away from my listening room to keep the noise down. Can a CAPS or dedicated player pull enough data over the wireless network without having to run a dedicated network cable?

I've tried it Joe, and its very "jittery". Plays for a few seconds, stops, then plays again, then stops. Drove me nuts. But I may have had too much interference from other gear. Is there anyway to just run a Cat6 (I prefer Cat6 for audio to Cat5e) to another room where the NAS and router sit? You can control JRiver from JRemote on the iPad (works like a charm) and run it all to your CAPS and then on to the DAC2X. The CAPS is dead quiet. Zero noise. FWIW....my Synology 1812+ NAS is very quiet. I never hear it.

Thanks Mike.

It's not a huge deal to get the cable run. I just need to schedule a friend of mine to help.

I agree. Wireless just doesn't do it very well. When I tried it, it worked ok for normal but was crap when playing hi res.

wireless "N" "should" work... Wireless "G" typically "can" work up to about 92k/24 bit.

..and I've seen wireless "N" setups that are crap, Wireless "G" that work wonderfully.

and then there is the issue where even if the overall bandwidth is good enough, you have periodic stalls due to external interference.
wired GigE is your friend when it comes to 192k 24bit or higher from NAS. :)

Before I used an external HDD connected directly to my Mac Mini, I did stream my files through a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+. It was set up wirelessly and I never had a problem with drop-outs. I used a wireless "N" router and only had a couple other devices on the network at the time. I would try it first before having someone come in to run a line. I've heard that some people hear a difference between wired and wireless but I'm not one of those people. :)

Joe, if I remember right , you were the one that told me to run an ethernet cable to my Linn !!

Ha !

Correctomundo!

I was just being lazy and I know better. I'm going to have a friend help me but in the meantime I plan on experimenting a little.

I have no issues pulling my music wirelessly from the Meridian MC-200 to my 2-channel room. Actually I wouldn't have to worry about fan noise as this Music Core product doesn't have a fan. This product works much better than I anticipated and the iPad interface is very nice.

I like that the unit easily switches between hi rez, 16/44 and MP3 without a glitch or user intervention.

Hi Jim,

Looks like the Meridian is a nice system. I'm glad it's working out great for you.

I've been pulling full uncompressed cd music from my network through the modified Sonos without issue but have not tried any higher rez through the network yet.
