AAM Auralic Aries Mini

We got ours, but unfortunately, Auralic sent all our units in white...

It took, literally, 2 minutes to set up. Very easy. Hooked it up to our Wharfedale/Hegel system, and it's sounding glorious! I will AxB against the internal Hegel DAC tomorrow!

Damn...Auralic themselves, is out of Black; and admits...there probably won't be any available, until the beginning of next year!

They suggested I try Audio Advisor; and late last night...they were showing "in stock". I figure, I'll place the order...first thing this morning; and now it says 3-5 days.

I called CS, and asked them if that meant...they literally sold out overnight (so I could kick myself, for not snapping it up, right then and there); and they said they couldn't confirm that. I asked if they really thought, they'd have them...in 3-5 days; and she said "if we have them on order"...which they didn't :(

One last possibility, and then I'm afraid...for once; I will not be, first on board...with a new streaming gadget, lol.

Chris,

I'm terribly sorry... When we placed the (pre-)order, Auralic themselves asked if we wanted black or white, so we said 50/50. And that's what we were counting on receiving... But alas, we got everything in white...

Alex...nothing to apologize for; I appreciate the effort.

It's easier to say now...because I just secured a Black one :celebrate008_2:

Cool!!!!!
Let us know what you think of it... And post pics... I kinda liked the feel of the white one, BTW. It looks like an Apple device, actually! Very smooth finish, quite sleek!

Absolutely; but I'm going to be sitting it, atop this...

If I had this...

...then white would be just dandy. All about synergy, right...lol ;)

In the house since October 19th. Very nice unit. Have been putting it through its paces via USB, SPDIF and RCA outputs.

Help me get a jump-start!

I know there's been some talk, of using a controller...other than the Lightning DS.

1) There's no chance, I can use the Aurender's Conductor...is there?

2) Has the Lightning gotten significantly better, since Mike reported it to be very buggy, some months back?

Thanks

Chris,

1) No, Aurender is not UPNP or OpenHome compatible. It works with other OpenHome-compatible apps, like Linn Kazoo, though.
2) Yes, it's like a new app. Faster, more stable. I set up our Aries Mini in 2 minutes, flat. Also, I demonstrated the Aries to a customer the other day, and plugged his thumb drive, full of files. It scanned everything, with album art, in seconds. I remember this was something that would hang the app for several minutes on end before... And IMHO, it's still the best looking app out there. Shame it only works with Auralic devices now...

Thanks Alex. I'll certainly give it a spin. I assume, it does work...with JRemote; which I have a license for, and no longer really use?

Hello Chris -

Though I had never tried it before I downloaded the Aurender Conductor application to my iPad. Unfortunately while I can launch it, it only seems to work with Surender devices. So no go there.

I have used the Aries Mini with a variety of control points, including the Lumin application, Linn Kazoo as well as the Lightning DS application from Auralic. The Lightning DS application has been rock solid for me when using with the Aries Mini. Note I have been using that application since it was first released way back when for the original Aries, so I am quite familiar with it.

If you were referring to the Lightning Server that acts as the music server for any internal or locally attached storage ( or NAS storage is desired ) I don't use that too often. I have tended to stick with Minimserver running on my NAS for the past year.

The two primary reasons are because it allows me flexibility such as being able to sort "The Beatles" under "B" not "T", and it is super reliable and "just works".

The Lightning Server has gotten much more robust over the past year. When I first got the Aries Mini I used it, however at the time it had a bug in regards to not finding cover art when saved as "Folder.jpg" ( note the capital "F", it worked fine with lower case). I have read that issue is fixed. Also Minimserver has faster rescan times when you add new albums, though that is certainly not an issue of any significance.

I do know there are many folks using Lightning Server these days, and it is much more solid than previously reported.

So long story short, if you were referring to the controller application for the Aries, Lightning DS, you should be all set to go.

BTW, and FWIW, I prefer Roon to any other controller software. However Auralic support for Roon as a RoonReady device is probably still two months out. So I will have to wait for that option, or use my Mac Mini with Roon which is also attached to my system.

You will need to do setup with the Auralic Lighting DS application. This is usually a one time setup. There after you could control playback with many different UPnP or OpenHome controllers, such as Lightning DS, Linn Kazoo, Lumin, etc... . JRemote only works with JRIVER.

To use JRemote you would also need to have JRIVER running to manage your library. Refresh my memory, where is your music library stored?

Chris - at the moment I am using the standard power supply with the Aries Mini. I have heard reports of improvements to the sound quality, especially if one is using the DAC, by using a linear power supply such as the one made by Auralic that you have linked to in your message. I have read positive comments on the SBooster as well, but have tried neither in my system (yet).

I use the Sbooster with the Aria Mini music server and Wadia Digital Pre amp with mind blowing results .

Highly recommended

So...I have a question, that maybe users and/or dealers who hang here can answer:

I'm already a (faithful) TIDAL subscriber (BTW...it appears, they are starting to sell their music for download. Game changer!). The "free year" of TIDAL, you get with the AAM...has to be activated through the Lightning DS.

I mean...I guess I'll just go for it, and figure it out soon enough; but...

1) I wonder if it will let me, register my existing membership; or if I will have to, in essence, cancel that...and start a new account?

2) There's no chance...this will limit it...to the AAM only; is there?? I still have the Aurender and PC to stream TIDAL to, as well as the AAM.

I have to say...I think the AAM, is a pretty awesome little box; but I'm seeing some pretty damning feedback. Mostly about, coming in ~40% over cost projections...pre-order prices not being honored; and people, who either could give 2 figs about TIDAL...or, were already subscribers and are holding their breath, about how that's going to work out for them (::hand raised::

Also...I guess Lightning DS, sucks on anything other than iOS; and Auralic has basically confirmed, take it or leave it...development on the Android app, is done! I mean...I'm totally anti-Apple; but I do have an iPad Mini, for the Main room. And I'm actually impressed, by the DSL so far (couple of quirks, and/or learning curve...because I've gotten used to the Aurender Conducter); but this is eventually moving to the Bedroom system...where I either have a Fire or Android phone, for control options. That'll be interesting.

Plus...everyone, seems to be clamoring for Roon compatibility; and Auralic is giving the ole "we're waiting for their code" line. Jury out.
